Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I've had several people mention recently that they fear for my life. They say I should quit just walking out into traffic to make vehicles stop for me when I'm crossing the street. Actually I don't do that in the strictest sense. If a vehicle is a safe distance from me I start out into the crosswalk, but if it keeps coming at the ridiculous speed some do in the downtown area, I retreat and fall back to the curb. Most of the time, however, when I step out someone stops even if it is kind of abruptly. Also, I have people stop even if I am not expecting them to and am actually waiting for them to pass by the intersection.

The last of our area proms took place Saturday night when the Iowa-Grant juniors presented their class outfitted to the theme "Gatsby". It was a pretty decent evening weather-wise - the first time in this spring season!

The area garden centers are pretty much open now with the Upland Garden Club's annual "Spring Plant Sale" taking place at Harris Park in Dodgeville Saturday, May 17.

The Farmers Markets are open in Dodgeville and Mineral Point and that makes a lot of people very happy. There's nothing like good produce, cannings or fixins from the farms and gardens and handmade items from whoever brings them in!

With this being the first week of May, the colleges will be getting out soon and so will the high schools. That means the summer sports' season will be starting soon too. That also means the ball fields and parks will be bustling with youngsters pretty much the entire day. It also, also means we are looking for volunteers to help with the baseball tournaments that will be taking place in Dodgeville in July. We have one at Harris Park and then the Ohio Valley Regional (15 year olds) at Centennial Park. If anyone is so inclined to volunteer, contact either myself or Pat at the Chronicle or my cell phone is 608-553-0887.

The annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life was held at Harris Park in Dodgeville Friday night. There were a greater number of teams and participants than recent years. It's pretty remarkable the progress that has been made in cancer treatment. Some day hopefully we'll be able to take a pill or have a vaccination to put that disease right down on the ground! Some of the hard workers for that event are shown above getting things ready for the opening ceremony.

It sounds like we have some action on a few of the vacant building around Dodgeville. That will certainly be a plus as the tourist season is about to begin. I'll keep you informed!
