Not in good taste

Advertising is very important to a newspaper. It not only keeps the newspaper in business, it also helps the business or other entity that places it.
But the fact that both parties benefit does not take away the need for good taste.
Recently there was an ad that appeared in an area paper that used the headline, "I'm not an alcoholic; alcoholics go to meetings. I'm a drunk; we go to parties."
Of course the business that placed the ad serves alcoholic beverages and is trying to portray itself as a party capitol....a destination....the place to be.
I did not find that ad tasteful and I certainly did not find it funny. In fact it disturbed me.
We have a drinking problem in Wisconsin. We are one of the few states that lets underage kids drink in bars as long as they are accompanied by parents.
We have a high rate of operating motor vehicles while intoxicated. We have a high rate of deaths caused by impairment or damaged health.
It is just not funny to laugh at drinking problems and it is not right to encourage it.
Advertise your business. Advertise your event.
But do it tastefully and don't encourage something that will cause harm.
