Eagles take message to heart to advance
"I had to remind the girls a few times what we are playing for," he said after the Eagles dimmed the Braves 52-18.
A good indication the message was delivered and sunk in came as early as the first quarter when the two teams from opposite sides of the Six Rivers Conference did battle at Mineral Point Thursday. Barneveld saw Keegan Kamps score the first basket of the game to give Belmont a 2-0 lead then reeled off 18 straight points before Katelyn Schobert drew a foul at the buzzer on a desperation shot and made two of her three free throws.
Belmont made a little noise the second quarter when they scored the first seven points and outscored the Eagles 8-5 but that was their last gasp of the night.
Barneveld outscored the Lady Braves 17-2 in the third quarter and erased all doubts of a trip to La Crosse Saturday for a 7 pm game with Gilmanton.
After Mia Whitish stuffed in a rebound and Alie Klein answered for Belmont with a bank shot the rest of the third quarter was all Barneveld.
Rachel Slaney put in the next six points with a rebound, a shot from the lane and a move underneath. Baskets by Mia Whitish, Danielle Straubhaar, Hannah Whitish and a three by Cayla Carden closed out the frame.
Myers went to his bench in the fourth quarter and got points from Kristen Udelhofen, who nailed a three from the corner, Mattie Schave who worked her way in for a layup and Kelsee Fargo who scored the last three points of the game on a free throw and a driving layup.
When it was over Hannah Whitish led all scorers with 17 points which included a three pointer and several penetration drives as she solved the Belmont zones. Mia Whitish and Rachel Slaney both added nine points.
Belmont was led by Jannie deHaan and Keegan Kamps with five each.
"It isn't often that you have everyone play and they play a lot in a sectional semifinal," Myers said. "We were able to play everyone."
"Our starters played very well the first and third quarters. They played well defensively and we did a good job on the boards," Myers said.
"I was surprised with being able to outrebound them as much as we did," Myers said. "At times they had four girls on the floor that were 5-11 but our guards got into the rebound act and we were able to control that part of the game."
The Eagles were able to hold down Belmont's leading scorer Keegan Kamps as she only managed five.
"We forced her to her left as much as we could," Myers said.
As for the message about what they were playing for Myers said, "They figured it out pretty well."
