Pointers win long game with Bulldogs

There may have been 48 hours between pitches but the Mineral Point baseball team knew how to swing the bats.
The Pointers picked up a game with Boscobel that was suspended Tuesday in the top of the fifth which they led 11-7. They played one more inning and sent 17 batters to the plate, finishing off the win 23-8.
Gabe Ottoway only had to work an inning to finish as the winning pitcher. Besides pitching the win, Ottoway was also 2x5 at the plate with a pair of rbis. He struck out five and walked four in a nine hit effort.
Sy Staver was 5x6 and had a pair of hits along with two rbis in the sixth. One of his hits was a double.
Tarek Oellerich was 4x6 and also knocked in a pair of runs.
Tannler Ames had four rbis that started with a two run double in the first. He added a sac fly and an infield grounder to his rbi total.
Turner Poad was 3x5. He tripled and scored on an Ottoway hit in the second, walked with the bases loaded in the sixth and doubled for another rbi in the same frame.
Joey Gorgen and Dakota James both went 2x4 and scored twice. Gorgen also drove in a run.
"We had a rough fourth inning and kind of let them back in the game," said coach Dan Burreson. "We regained our focus when the game resumed and hit the ball very well on Thursday."
Every starter had at least one hit and seven of the nine starters had multiple hits," Burreson said. "We had great production up and down the line-up."
Ames and Alec Schmitz both had one hit for the Pointers.
Burreson also said the game ended with a great defensive play.
"A Major League play by Sy at shortstop ended the game," Burreson said. "Turner Poad gunned down two runners on the base paths."
The Pointers also played a non-conference game with SWC second place finisher River Valley and lost 9-5.
"This was a good test before the tournament," Burreson said. "Valley is a quality team and I thought we did some good things. We continued to hit the ball well. Tannler Ames was 3 x 4 and drove in 3. Tarek Oellerich was 3 x 4 and Turner Poad drove in a pair of runs."
River Valley scored in the first when Tim Knoll reached on an error and scored on a ground out.
The Blackhawks added two more in the third when Knoll was hit by a pitch, Ryan Wichman walked and Knoll scored on a sac fly by winning pitcher Lucas Price before Wichman scampered home on an error.
Wichman reached on an error in the fifth and scored on a single by Price.
The Hawks put the game away with a five run sixth. Derek Bodenstein singled, Beau Solomon was hit by a pitch and Knoll walked to load the bases. Wichman and Price both had rbi singles and a bases loaded walk to Colin Brummer made it 9-5.
Price had three hits and Cole Mahoney two to lead the Blackhawks.
The Pointers had a 2-1 lead after one as Oellerich led off with a double, Staver walked and Ames sent in Oellerich with a single. Staver advanced and scored on a ground out by Poad.
The Pointers finished their scoring in the fifth, plating three with two outs.
Oellerich and Staver singled and both scored on a hit by Ames. Poad knocked in Ames with another single.
Ames and Oellerich both went 3x4. Staver, Tommy Olson and Poad each had one hit.
The Pointers used a trio of pitchers as Alec Schmitz, Dylan Mcgilvra and Poad all got work.
"Alec Schmitz and Turner Poad both threw well," Burreson said. "They have both been hurt by lack of innings this spring, but they have continued to get better with each and every appearance."
