Owens, Leonard both qualify in two events, D-P heads to state

Lucky number 13!
Some say it's not so lucky, but for the Dodgeville-Mineral Point girls and boys track and field teams it is this year.
That's how many Division 2 events the two teams will be competing in this Friday and Saturday at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse.
For the girls, Hannah Owens leads the way qualifying in the two long distance runs - the 1600 and 3200.
She will run the 3200 as the next to last event on Friday taking off in lane 3.
On Saturday she will be in lane 9 for the 1600.
To qualify for state she ran an 11:15.3 in the 3200 at the Viroqua sectional to finish 3rd. She also took 3rd in the 1600 in 5:11.42.
Defending D2 state high jump champion Taylor Stanek will defend her title jumping in the 11th spot on Friday.
She took 4th at Viroqua in a group that all cleared 5'2".
Mary Hanson won the 800 meters at Viroqua in 2:19.55 and will run from the second head in lane four at state Saturday.
Brianna Johnsrud took 4th in the discus at Viroqua with a 120'4" effort. That put her throwing 6th at state on Saturday.
The 4x800 relay team of Hanson, Emily Philipps, Kennedy Stumpf and Brittany Rhyner won by over two seconds at Viroqua in 9:32.01 and will run from lane three in the second heat Friday.
The 4x400 team of Stumpf, Rhyner, Mikaela Bakker and Sydney Staver will also run in lane three of the second heat as a result of their 2nd place finish in 4:03.43 at Viroqua. They run on Saturday.
Other finishes for the girls were: 4x200-7th (Jaynie Gorgen, Stanek, Jalissa Weier, Marissa Parkin) 1:48.95; 400-Bakker 5th 1:00.93, Philipps 15th 1:04.84; 300 hurdles-Stanek 7th 48.38, Megan Pluemer 13th 52.32, Lizzy Doolittle 15th 53.29; 200-Sarah Lawinger 16th 30.27; discus-Melissa Seman 12th 102'11"; triple jump-Alexa Bohnsack 8th 33'; 1600-Hanson 6th 5:15.73, Mackenzie Hall 12th 5:41.19.
Chanler Leonard led the boys team qualifying in two of the jumps.
He went 6'2" in the high jump for 4th place and will jump fourth on Saturday. He also took 4th with a 21'7" long jump and will be the seventh jumper Saturday.
Marcus Ellerman finished 3rd in the 800 in 1:58.76 and will run from the 10th lane in the 2nd heat on Friday.
Jonah Nelson finished 5th at Viroqua, but earned a spot as an extra qualifier with his 4:21.2 time. To show just how powerful that race was at Viroqua, that was the 5th fastest time posted that day in the state. He will run Friday from the 6th lane.
The 4x400 relay team of Ellerman, Ryan Raess, Nelson and Jack Schickel took 4th in 3:26.95 and will run from lane three in the second heat Saturday.
The 4x800 team of Nelson, Steven Blume, Schickel and Ellerman qualified in the top spot Saturday in 8:07.38 and will run from lane one in the second heat in the final event Saturday.
Other finishes were: triple jump-Leonard 7th 42'3.75"; 110 hurdles-Leonard 14th 16.74; 4x200-Kyle Fitzsimmons, Jason Gullickson, Raess, Cris Francia 9th 1:33.44; 400-Nathan Eisenzimmer 11th 55.08; 300 hurdles-Jim McGuire 7th 42.26, Gulllickson 14th 46.2; 200-Noah Goetzke 12th 25.02; high jump-Alex Steil 10th 5'8".
"Everyone including myself and most the coaches were nervous about going to Viroqua for the sectional for the first time. But after the first event, I knew this was the place to be today, said Dodge-Point coach Joe Hanson.
"We had an exceptional day as we got most everyone we thought we would go to La Crosse. You're always a bit disappointed when you don't get everyone through. These kids work so hard and in some cases are so talented, we feel they should be at the State meet.
"I guess the last event of the night was a perfect way to end as both boy's and girl's 4x 400 relay teams qualified for State and set school records.
"There were lots of smiles from athletes, parents, fan and coaches.
"Going into the State meet, we are just thrilled to have this many athletes going up there. Hopefully we will get some of these kids up on that podium but beyond that, we just want to drive home after the meet with more smiles."
