Panthers hang on to leash the Bulldogs

When the longest eight minutes of Iowa-Grant girls basketball coach Craig Jenkins's life ended he knew one thing about the Panthers.
They can win the close games.
But not by much, it turned out, as the Panthers watched a 15 point lead all but disintegrate in the final quarter. However, the "all but" was the key as they held on for a 52-51 win over Boscobel in a SWAL game Thursday.
The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 23-10 the final quarter but the visitors refused to break. Instead they denied what could have been the game winning shot and took home the win.
With six seconds left and after a missed bonus free throw the Lady Bulldogs got the ball and tried an out of bounds play. Panther guard Taylor Jackson got a hand in the way and swatted the ball out of bounds. Boscobel got a second chance with four seconds left but a runner through the lane did not drop.
"That last quarter seemed like it was taking forever," Jenkins said. "I am proud of the girls for playing so well and surviving the momentum swing."
"We have a very young team and when we win the close one it is a big win," Jenkins said. "It was good to see us keep our composure in such a tight game."
Jordan Grimm had 12 points in a breakout performance for the Panthers. Freshman Emma Liddicoat added 11.
The Panthers did all their scoring in the fourth quarter from the free thow line. Liddicoat was five for nine, Carley Richards was three for four and Jackson one for two.
Kenzie Trumm, who had 17 for Boscobel, and Shaeden Carlin led the final quarter surge with five and six points as six girls scored.
"Boscobel is a good team and shot outstanding in the last quarter," Jenkins said. "I am proud of how we handled the ball against their pressure."
"Winning this one proves we can compete in the close games."
