Eagle girls take sole possession of first

It was a battle of unbeatens in the Six Rivers East Saturday when the Barneveld and Black Hawk girls basketball teams faced off in a game that was postponed from earlier in the season..
After the first quarter, however, little doubt remained in fans' minds who had the better team - and TEAM was the key word.
"She was the best athlete out on the floor," said Barneveld coach Jim Myers. Now he wan't talking about any of his players - he was talking about Black Hawk senior Jen Wellnitz.
The Lady Warrior scored a game-high 26 points and made some dazzling plays on both ends of the court.
She found her team down 20-4 after the first quarter and brought them back to 34-19 by halftime with 11 points in that frame.
But, the Eagles countered with a pair of scorers of their own and the fact that 12 of 13 players reached the scoring column.
It was a three pointer by Eagle freshman Mia Whitish that gave them the 15-point lead as she swished one from long range in a buzzer beater at the end of the second quarter.
"I thought Mia's three was big going into halftime. They had made a couple of runs, but we sustained them."
It was Mia's cousin, Hannah Whitish, who led the Eagle charge all day as she nearly matched Wellnitz point for point, getting 24. She had 14 in the first half and buried a pair of three pointers in each half. She had several steals that resulted in layups for either herself or one of her teammates.
Barneveld's Rachel Slaney added 17 points on the day, getting 10 of those in the first half.
"I thought our start was the key," Myers said. "We came out with a lot of intensity and took a big lead at the end of one. Also, we had seven kids score in that first quarter (TEAM thing). That makes a huge difference when you get that many kids involved."
Note: they also had seven score in the fourth quarter.
"They (Black Hawk) threw a few things at us to start the second half, but we were patient and got the ball inside and were able to get a couple of runs to give us a little more room. We had great balance today and the contributions by everyone was really big today.
