Milliken's shot gives Panthers tourney crown
If that is the case then the Iowa-Grant boys basketball team must be pretty fit.
The Panthers withstood a last quarter run by North Crawford and broke a tie with a clutch shot at the 7:58 of the final eight minute quarter.
Enter Trent Milliken and a bit of play making magic.
The Panthers called a time out with both teams sitting at 44 and drew up a play that, if it worked, would get a good shot near the basket.
When the Panthers got back on the court they ran the play and found Milliken set up eight feet from the basket. He took the pass, put up the shot and everyone watched as the ball snuggled into the net at the buzzer.
Final score, IG 46, NC 44.
The shot gave the Panthers more than the win. It also gave them the championship of the River Ridge Tournament.
The Panthers got 13 points from Isaac Anderson, 12 from Milliken and 10 from Brett Wunderlin.
"I was especially pleased with Brett's play," said coach Toby Tripalin. He had a really nice game for us."
The Panthers had a 37-25 lead heading into the final quarter but saw it disappear with some tough pressure from North Crawford.
"We didn't do a very good job taking care of the basketball," Tripalin said. "We also struggled with our decision making. They came back on us and got it tied."
But Milliken and the execution of the play took care of that.
"Both teams were good and I think we showed we can play with good teams," said Tripalin. "Albany was 4-0 and North Crawford 7-1."
"We are not at full strength yet but expect Colin Conner and Wilder Olson back this week," Tripalin said. "We have to keep playing hard, execute and play unselfishly. If we do that we can be pretty good."
"I hope the players believe in their ability as much as I do."
The Eagles have Boscobel and Cuba City next Tuesday and Thursday.
