Brodhead wins battle of Cardinals
The Highland Cardinals lost to the Brodhead Cardinals 55-43 Saturday in the consolation round. Highland hung within a half dozen points until late in the game when Brodhead outscored them 13-7 down the stretch.
"It kind of got away from us at the end," said Highland coach Mitchell Dorshorst.
On the Brodhead side, the 6-2 Slocum was driving and dashing to a 24 point outing.
"We couldn't get him stopped," Dorshorst said. "We tried a couple different defenses to try and stop him but he picked his way through them and got to the rim."
Griffin Day, a 6-0 guard, added 10 for Brodhead.
The Highland Cardinals, playing without their leading scorer for the second straight game, got some offensive help from Bailey Bodenstein, a 5-10 senior guard who is recovering from ACL surgery. Bodenstein chipped in 13 points in his second start of the season.
"Bailey picked it up today," Dorshorst said. "He is getting more confident as he recovers and rehabs and we hope to get him back to full strength soon."
Andrew Wolfe kept out of foul trouble and stayed around to put in 10 points.
Highland will spend some time practicing until they return to the court January 10 when they travel to Belmont to resume Six Rivers West play.
