Three from RV, one Dodger head to D2 state individual tourney
The Blackhawks claimed two championships at the Adams-Friendship Sectional Saturday in 145 lb. Joe Crook and 195 lb. Zach Koch. Dustin Hatfield, at 106 lbs., finished second and will also advance.
They had four wrestlers just miss out (top three finishers in each weight class advance) as 113 lb. Gavin Wipperfurth, 132 lb. Elijah Alt, 170 lb. Wyatt Schauf and 285 lb. Kaleb Crook each took fourth.
"We had a good second round. We had 7 in the final round with three in the finals and 4 going for third or higher. We did not have a great final round though," were the overall comments of the day by River Valley coach Ralph Liegel.
"Dustin had a real good kid from Adams Friendship that he had problems getting in on. Joe Crook is really wrestling well right now. He has a very tough bracket at state, but I think he is ready for the challenge. Zach Koch wrestled well enough to win Saturday, but will have to wrestle better in Madison. He most likely will have a wrestler who has beaten him the last two years," the coach said about his individual qualifiers.
"I was hoping to get a few more to state, but those that did not make it are young and will be back next year. They will use this experience to their benefit next year," Liegel said about his courth place finishers.
"The three boys going to state are looking for high finishes. Joe and Zach have been there before and know what to expect, but Dustin is a freshman. Hopefully having the two seniors with him will help him out. I'm excited for all of them. They have worked hard and now is the time for that hard work to pay off," the coach concluded.
Dodgeville sophomore Brady Wetter will make his second consecutive appearance at D2 state due to his runner-up finish at 170. He lost to unbeaten Justin Dolata of Mauston in the finals.
