Another terrible, needless loss

By J. Patrick Reilly-preilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

Phillip Seymour Hoffman, an accomplished actor, died Sunday of a heroin overdose at the age of 46.
This has been leading the news for a couple days. His death will be discussed at length at least until his funeral services are completed. Everyone who speaks will be sorry he died.
Last week's issue of The Dodgeville Chronicle reported charges of supplying heroin. Police are investigating at least one death with the possibility of overdose and a couple other overdoses that required medical treatment by victims who allegedly bought from him.
Those people will not be in the headlines.
But the person who died of the overdose, along with others in this area who have also met their fate in the same manner no doubt suffer the same addiction as the famous actor.
We have reported through a series of stories about the dangers of heroin. We have urged more involvement financially on a federal, state and local basis. We have stated over and over that there is a heroin problem in this area and it is growing.
Once again we urge more funding for our drug task force.  We urge people to be aware that addicts try to hide the fact they are using. We urge people to be involved and informed.
As Sunday's happening shows, lives depend on it.
