When shots aren't falling, it's tough to win. And when you have to defend a 6'6" 250+ lb. Ben Latimer and you let him score 29 points, it's tough to win.
Those were two obstacles that the Dodgeville boys basketball team tried to overcome Monday night in a non-conference contest against Monroe - and couldn't.
Although the Dodgers held a 32-27 lead at halftime, a six point third quarter did them in. The final score was Monroe 63 Dodgeville 56.
Latimer hit a game-high 29 points on the night with 16 coming in the second half - where they outscored the Dodgers 36-24 with two 18-point frames.
Latimer, a junior, had help from sophomore Alex Tordoff (13 points) and senior Kevin Noriega (10 points). Tordoff hit six in the final frame.
The Dodgers found themselves down quickly at 14-5 in the first quarter then clawed their way back to trailing just 19-13 at its close.
They outscored the Cheese 19-8 in the second frame, taking their first lead on a three pointer by Trent Jones, who hit three on the night.
Then came the third period when Monroe went on an 18-6 run and that was when the Dodgers saw a lot of shots roll in and out of the basket.
Jones ended the contest with 24 points with Levi Nagel adding 11 and Caleb Grady 10.
"We executed down the stretch better than we did earlier in the game," said Dodger coach Ryan Bohnsack. "Hopefully we will remember this and be able to do it down the stretch of the season."
"We just can't only score six points in the third quarter against a team like this. We struggled with their big guy," he added.
"But it all boils down to we have to execute better against the good teams. We can get away with it against some of the teams we play, but not the god ones. If we want to achieve our goals we just have to execute better," Bohnsack reiterated.
