Eagles get defensive with Lady Hillmen
At the very least, it no doubt sent a "what the heck can you do" feeling through the minds of the Lady Hillmen who saw the Barneveld Eagles cruise past them to a 74-26 win in the opening round of the Barneveld holiday tournament.
Hannah Whitish, Barneveld's junior guard and latest Eagle to reach the 1000 point career mark, took an out of bounds pass with three seconds left on the clock, dribbled hard to the key on the other end of the floor and got off a shot that swished in at the buzzer. It was her second three pointer and her eighth point of the quarter that ended 19-4.
Hannah Whitish finished with 20 points.
Rachel Slaney, another 1000 point scorer for the Eagles started the second quarter with a three pointer which led to a 42-11 lead at the half.
Slaney finished as the game's scoring leader with 22 points and completed a double double with 11 rebounds. She also had nine steals.
It was her steals that seemed to frustrate the Lady Hillmen the most, Slaney was an equal opportunity passer, getting others involved in the scoring. Nine girls got into the box score for the Eagles.
At the end of three quarters the Eagles had a 46 point lead, 66-20 and rolled to the final total with a continuous clock.
Defense was the biggest weapon the Eagles had. Platteville had to work for every point and had nothing in the book in the second quarter until 3:27 remained in the frame when their main scoring threat, Cassie Hamer, made the first of two free throws. Hamer finished the game with six points.
It didn't get much better after that for the Lady Hillmen.
"Our defense was the difference," said Barneveld coach Jim Myers. "I was pleased with our hustle and how hard we worked."
Myers said the Eagles knew the Lady Hillmen like to use the high-lo post but the Eagles kept that from happening.
"We made them do some things they didn't want to do," he said.
He was also pleased with the bench play.
"We had a lot of contributions off the bench and that was nice to see," he said.
One of those was an eight point quarter by Maggie Oimoen who is coming off an injury. She was dominating at times until she became victim of five fouls.
"We had nine of the 10 girls score," he said. "It was a nice night."
In the other game of the tourney, Mount Horeb beat Pioneer Westfield 59-37 to set up the championship game with the Eagles.
