Cardinals hold on to beat Wisconsin Heights

When Wisconsin Heights guard Jacob Wheeler's last second shot was heading for its intended target, the Highland's boys basketball team was awaiting their fate.
Would it be a two point win or a one point loss?
The shot got to the rim, started to find a home then rolled off, giving the Cardinals a 55-53 come from behind win in a non-conference game.
Wheeler, who registered only one point for the night, was not the first choice to shoot the shot but he was the one who ended up with the ball in his hands with a tick left on the clock.
After a 10-10 first quarter Wisconsin Heights outscored Highland by two the second frame for a 24-22 halftime lead.
Things turned ugly for the first few minutes of the third quarter but halfway through the Cardinals decided they came to play. Trailing by five heading into the fourth they went on a 22-15 run to earn the win.
"We weren't patient and were not playing defense early in the third," said coach Mitchell Dorshorst.
But the final frame belonged to the Cardinals.
"We took it to them in the fourth quarter," said Dorshorst. "We won it at the free throw line."
Austin Yager once again got to the line and helped put the game away. The senior guard had 12 points, six from the line.
JR Linscheid, a sophomore guard, led all scorers with 26 points, four from the line, and Alex Michek added 11.
"We missed three front ends of bonus shot and it we had made them we would have had a comfortable lead," said Dorshorst. The Cardinals were 12 for 18 on free throws.
Linscheid had 14 of his points the final quarter.
"He really stepped it up," Dorshorst said.
Tyler Barman and Colt Friske both had 15 points for the Vanguards.
"We are pretty happy with the win," Dorshorst said.
