Strong second half by Redbirds sinks Panthers
Instead, the momentum stayed with the Redbirds who outscored the Panthers 37-28 the second half and picked up a 59-45 win in the early stages of the SWAL season.
Tripalin said in his preseason questionnaire that Darlington would be one the challengers for SWAL honors this season and he expected the Panthers to be able to play with them.
He was right, for the most part, but knows the IG team needs to do some fine tuning.
He was impressed with the intensity the Panthers used in matching up with the Redbirds in the early stages but saw some ebb and flow the last two quarters.
"We played hard defense in the first half and lost a little intensity in the second half," Tripalin said.
The Redbirds had a pair of high double figure scorers as Cole McDonald put in 23 points and Ben Muhlstein added 19.
The Panthers couldn't match it as their double figure scorers had 13 (Isaac Anderson) and 10 (Brayden Johnson).
"We haven't shot the ball well all year because we aren't executing the way we are capable of," Tripalin said. "We do lead the nation in free throw percentage though...100%... unfortunately we have only shot five all year."
