Pointer boys defense Iowa-Grant
The ball just wasn't going in for the host Iowa-Grant boys basketball team early on Friday night - the result an 11-4 Mineral Point lead after the first quarter.
The Panthers played them pretty even in quarter two with the Pointers holding a 13-12 edge and a 24-16 lead at halftime.
Then came the outburst by the visitors.
Sy Staver, who led all scorers with 23 points, buried a pair of three pointers, a bucket and a free throw in the third frame. Tarek Oellerich hit six of his 10 markers and the Pointers outscored I-G 19-10.
Staver and Alec Schmiz (13 points on the night) both hit seven in the final frame for a 17-4 margin and an eventual 59-31 Mineral Point win in the SWAL opener for both teams.
"I felt we played well in the first half," said Iowa-Grant coach Toby Tripalin. "We had aseveral good looks, but the ball just didn't go in. We missed a lot of shots."
The coach also felt his team "didn't do a good job boxing out under the basket" and that they didn't play with the energy "we need to against teams like Mineral Point."
"Mineral Point does a good job defensively. They really took us out of our game," Tripalin added. "They played with more passion than we did."
The Panthers matched the Pointers in having seven players score, but nobody for I-G had more than six points.
Trent Millkien, Collin Price and Sawyer Stuckey were the Panthers who hit six.
"I thought we really played good defense tonight," said Pointer coach Dan Burreson. "We also did a better job with the ball and moved it better in the second half."
"We have the luxury of five players who can really move and handle the ball and score well," he added. "And tonight it was Sy who led us in scoring, but it can be a different player every time we play."
