Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I had brunch with former neighbors Jack and Dorothy Weirich and their son John Sunday following church. It was a great conversation day that was filled with laughter. It seems like every time we get together there are more and more stories floating around. With Jack being 96 and Dorothy 90, there are a lot of things to talk about, but both the Brewers and Packers always come up sometime during the conversation.

I had received a call from a fellow named Roy Harris, who graduated 50 years ago from Webster Groves Missouri High School, who was looking for former teachers at his school who were still living to come to their 50 year class reunion. Anyway, he had googled Dorothy Weirich, who was a speech teacher there, and came up with a mention by me in a column about Dorothy (former neighbor) and thought that she should be the teacher he was searching for - but she wasn't. The Dorothy he was looking for was a graduate of Southeast Missouri State and (my) Dorothy is a graduate of Madison Vocational School. The ages are similar, but the Dorothy he was looking for actually would be 97 now (I found her on Google). (My)âDorothy was never a speech teacher, but a computer person. I will be getting hold of Roy to tell him the story!

This coming Saturday and Sunday will be the Iowa County Antique &âCollectors Power Show at the Iowa County Fairgrounds in Mineral Point. I enjoy seeing the way the "oldtimers" did the work around the farm before there was actually any electricity to plug things into. You can see a lot of things being done by gasoline and steam engines and being hand powered if you make a stop there either day.

Another event is the annual "Dodgeville Sidewalk Sale" being held throughout downtown Dodgeville. Businesses and area vendors will be on the sidewalk with their wares - all great bargains just in time for back to school and the end of summer!

Also on Sunday will be the 2nd of the summer Dodgeville Lions Club Antique and Flea Market inside of Ley Pavilion at Harris Park on the east side of Dodgeville. There will be a lot of great things on display for sale by vendors from all over. Plus there is a food/concession stand that I will be at, along with several other members - and the Lioness will be serving homemade pie. You can also purchase whole pies too. The Lions are planning to build a shelter at Harris Park near the basketball/volleyball courts and are also planning to reside the dugouts at Harris Park - as two of their near future projects. If you're thinking about joining an active group that does a lot of projects to help the area, stop by and talk with one of the members!

It's just a couple of weeks and the annual Iowa County Fair will be upon us. That also means that schools have (or will very soon) started. That also means that the summer is pretty much over and that fall sports are in full swing. There are boys soccer matches being played this week, football games being played Friday night and volleyball scrimmages on Saturday. The last couple of Friday nights have been pretty nice for me to get rested up before "the games begin"!

We are fortunate to have Rylee Dressler, a Dodgeville young lady, as the 2014 Wisconsin Rodeo Queen. She can be seen above riding around the ring at the regional held in Mineral Point recently. She carried the USâflag into the ring.
