Rockies outlast Knights to advance to finals

The Dodgeville Knights had their season ended Sunday by their neighbors from the southeast, the young, upstart Hollandale Rockies.
Fresh from an upset over the Argyle Beavers, the Rockies continued knocking off teams on the way to the Western Section finals. Sunday, Hollandale, which stared out as the number 7 seed, continued to roll, eliminating number 5 seed Dodgeville to set up a meeting Sunday with number 8 seed Oregon.
The Orioles have a similar success story, knocking off top seed Verona in the first round and number 3 seed Mount Horeb/Pine Bluff last Sunday.
It undoubtedly is the first time the two lowest seeds will determine who represents the section in the Round Robin Championship Series.
Sunday a stellar relief performance by Kyle Thompson held off the Knights until the Rockies could claim a 10-8 win. Thompson ended up as the pitcher of record, notching one of the biggest wins in Rockies history.
Thompson took over for starter Roy Hehn.
The Knights scored a run in the first when Ian Streeter scored on a wild pitch. They took the lead to 2-0 in the third when Austin Larson singled, advanced on a bunt by Mark Ludwig and scored on Streeter's single.
The Rockies erupted in the fifth for seven runs, highlighted by a three run double by Jared Rear and a two run home run by Shawn Monson.
But the Knights were prompt with their comeback, plating five runs in the fifth to tie the game.
Veteran Tony DeMuth started it with a lead-off single and advanced on a hit by Larson. Ludwig then found a gap for a two run single and Streeter singled for one more. Danny Sullivan walked and came around to score on Tanner Solberg's single.
The Knights took their last lead of the game in the seventh. Ludwig and Streeter traded places with back to back doubles for the run.
But, Thompson, who came in during the fifth inning rally, shut out the Knights the rest of the way.
Rear struck again with his fourth rbi of the game that proved to be the gamewinner in the eighth. Michael Schlimgen scored the run that tied the game earlier in the frame when he stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball.
The Rockies added an insurance run in the ninth when Michael Nolden walked and scored on an error.
Thompson also swung the bat for the Rockies, going 2x5 and scoring twice. Rear finished 3x4 and Logan Benish 4x5.
Rear finished with four rbis, Monson two with Thompson, Alex Schauff and Benish each driving in one.
The first three Dodgeville batters totaled three hits each. Larson and Streeter were 3x5 while Ludwig was 3x4. Solberg, Austin Yager and DeMuth rounded out the 12 hit Knights attack.
Nic Pierick went four innings for the Knights, fanning three, walking two and giving up five hits and five runs.
Brad Simmons went 4 2/3 with one strikeout, two walks, seven hits and five runs.
Jay Lindner threw the final 1/3.
"We had five errors which didn't help and while it wasn't our best performance of the season it was a very interesting game," said Knights manager Pat Reilly. "We gave it all we had but Hollandale prevailed and we wish them luck in the finals."
