Along The Ad Routes

It was a great day Sunday with the Dodgeville Knights home Talent Baseball Team honoring brother Pat for his 50 years of coaching Dodgeville Home Talent. He started coaching just after he got out of high school - age 18. Oops I guess I let the cat out of the bag as to how old he is - but it's still between two years (hint 68 & 69)! There was a ceremony before the game when he was presented a plaque and he was surrounded on the field by current and former home talent players. Then there was a reception/picnic after the game where a good amount of people came to "salute" him. The only problem with the day was that the Knights lost to Hollandale 10-8, but it was a good and exciting game with one bounce going our way and it may've been a different story. We were missing two starters and a top relief pitcher, but you play the game with the hand you're dealt!

Friday night I was treated to another very good home talent baseball game. This one was at the Mallards Park in Madison and pitted the North/Northwest vs the South/Southwest All-Stars. That game ended up 5-4 in favor of the South/Southwest. Dodgeville's player representative was Kristian Haag, who played right field and made a good catch besides reaching base one out of two trips to the plate. Brother Pat is one of the co-ordinaters of the event.

Saturday was the Dairyland Dare bicycle event and boy I don't think I've seen that many bikers anywhere at one time before. I heard there were some 2000 entered - all who got to enjoy the scenery pretty much all around southwestern Wisconsin.

Also on Saturday was the Wisconsin High School Regional Rodeo in Mineral Point at the Iowa County Fairgrounds. It sure is a lot of fun seeing those youngsters attempting to do what the "big boys" do on television in the national events - and they do a pretty good job of it. My only disappointment would be that there seem to be fewer and fewer "local" competitors every year. I know it's a time consuming thing, but there are a lot of rewards in participating and you get to meet people from all over!

Next Thursday, August 21 is the first day of Dodgeville's Sidewalk Sale. There will be businesses on the sidewalk downtown as well as vendors, some games and a fire truck on display. That goes through Saturday the 23rd.

With the home talent game Sunday, I didn't get a chance to go to the Cobb Corn Roast parade and enjoy some of that delicious sweet corn that they give out. I did, however, get to go to the Classic Car Show that was held on Saturday. I got to see a restored 1968 Oldsmobile by classmate Larry Edwards. He drove it around a lot back in "our" day! He has been taking it to several car shows and has won prizes already. Check him out in the above photo!
