Be aware of motorcycles

By Brooke Bechen-bbechen@thedodgevillechronicle.com

Police in Janseville are currently looking for a vehicle that is responsible for the deaths of two young motorcyclists on Highway 14. The accident happened Monday night, and it appears the driver of the vehicle crossed the center line heading toward a group of motorcyclists.
With the nice weather this weekend and hopefully in the weeks to come, it is the perfect time to talk about motorcycle safety, both as the rider and as a motorist sharing the road with motorcyclists.
Here are a few tips for motorists sharing the road:
-Be aware of motorcycles during the spring and summer months and promote motorcycle awareness among your friends and family.
-Yield to motorcycles and don't make a rash decision to turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle. They may be going faster than they appear.
-"Look twice and save a life." Check your mirrors and blind spots for motorcyclists before changing lanes. Also scan intersections for motorcycles.
-Don't be distracted! Put down those cells phones and other activities that can distract you from driving safetly.
-Drive sober.
A few tips for motorcyclists on the road:
-Obey the speed limit, as speeding is the number one contributing factor in motorcycle crashes.
-Get educated. Enroll in rider education classes to learn about control and reduce the risk of injury.
-Be sure your motorcycle is safe to ride. Wear armored and reflective safety gear, including a helmet.
-Change lanes properly and be aware of other motorists' blind spots. Be aware of your surroundings and always maintain a safety zone.
-Ride sober.
