Eagles, Cards split in twinbill

Crafty junior lefty Austin Yager turned in a complete game for Highland Friday and gave Barneveld its first loss of the season, 4-2.
"First time we've seen a lefty all season and it showed," Barneveld coach Lance Schmitz said. "He pitched well against us and we had a hard time hitting him."
Barneveld salvaged a split in the Six Rivers doubleheader but not without going nine innings in the nightcap. Theā€ˆEagles came back to tie the game and win it with a three run ninth.
Yager fanned seven and walked two in a complete game effort for the Cardinals. He gave up a run in the first and was tagged for another in the fifth.
Highland got a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh on seven hits.
Barneveld's run in the first came on a Tyler Hellenbrand rbi single that drove in Cole Breuer who had singled earlier.
Their run in the fifth came on a pair of doubles. Breuer hit the first one then Carson Carmody banged one two feet from going over to send him home.
Highland got its run in the fourth when Hellenbrand tired and issued a couple walks. Dustin Hodgson came on it relief and the run scored and a fielders choice by Riley Crapp.
Highland struck for two runs in the fifth. Nathan Robinson singled then with two outs Bailey Bodenstein singled and moved into scoring position. Andrew Wolfe then singled in both runs.
The final Cardinal run came in the seventh. Bodenstein reached on an error, was bunted to second and took third on a wild pitch. Blake Bomkamp drove him in with an rbi single.
Hellenbrand (8) and Hodgson (6) combined to strike out 14 Highland batters. Both gave up an earned run.
"If you would have told me we would strike out 14 and get beat I would not have believed it," Schmitz said. "But Yager pitched really well, something you don't expect to see this early in the season."
"We hit the ball well but had a couple errors at the wrong time that hurt us."
Barneveld had a couple pitchers that were able to combine for the win in the extra inning nightcap.
Breuer went seven innings, game up six hits, fanned 13 and walked three. He did not give up an earned run.
Carmody finished, working two, fanning four and giving up one walk. The run off him was unearned.
Wolfe went four, Robinson one and Crapp four for Highland. Wolfe fanned four and walked three, Robinson k'd one and walked four and Crapp fanned seven and walked two.
Bomkamp was 2x4 and John Ross Linscheid 2x5 for Highland. Wolfe, Bomkamp and Crapp each had rbis.
Wolfe, Nate Michek and Bodenstein had the rest of Highland's hits.
Barneveld was visitor in the second game and got on the board right away when Carmody deposited the ball over the left field fence.
Highland grabbed the lead in the bottom of the frame when two errors and a passed ball helped Bomkamp come up with a two run single.
The Cards added a run in the second when Yager singled up the middle to score Linscheid who had singled earlier.
Barneveld tied it in the sixth on walks to Carmody and Hellenbrand followed by a passed ball. Nate Franque's fielders choice sent in Carmody and moved Hellenbrand to third. Will Clausen then squeezed him in to tie the game.
The three run ninth gave the Eagles the win.
Wes Williams started it when he was hit by a pitch. Hodgson's bunt ended up a base hit then Breuer ripped a double to a 4-3 lead. Carmody drew an intentional pass then Hellenbrand pulled the surprise of the day with a two out squeeze bunt and two runs ended up scoring.
Highland got one back in the bottom but it wasn't enough.
"Highland ran the bases well and those were two good ball games," Schmitz said. "It was good to get the second game win."
