Clutch mound work keys Dodgeville win

Sophomore pitcher Jordan Olson watched the Dodgers mount a 7-3 lead thorough the first six inning in their SWC game with defending champion River Valley Thursday,
Senior lefthander Austin Larson had worked into the fourth before tiring and needed some help from Brian Simmons. Olson did not know that Simmons would be out of innings after the sixth.
As the only arm left, Olson took the baseball and ended up striking out the side in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.
He struck out the first batter he faced then gave up a single and a walk before finding the zone again and fanning the last two outs.
The Dodger mound staff had held the Blackhawks scoreless for six of the seven innings.  River Valley got something going in the fourth when they sent nine batters to the plate,
Lucas Price singled to open the frame and Mitch Nachreiner reached on an error. Walks and a single by Tim Knoll accounted for three runs before Simmons came on to strike out the final out.
Dodgeville had built a 7-0 lead by the time RV got on the board.
Larson singled with two outs in the first and Simmons singled him to second. Three straight hits--singles by Travis Hendrickson, Cole Sullivan and Jordan Larson--made it 3-0.
Trent Jones singled to start the second, stole second and got to third on a wild pitch. Logan Yeager coaxed a walk and stole second, setting up a bases loaded intentional walk to Austin Larson. Simmons then singled for two runs and a third scored on a fielders choice.
The final Dodgeville run came on a single by Hendrickson, an error and an rbi single by Jordan Larson sent home courtesy runner Bobby McNeill.
Price led River Valley with a 2x3 day at the plate. Simmons and Jordan Larson both were 2x4 for the Dodgers while Jones and Hendrickson both had 2x3 days at the plate.
Larson fanned four, Simmons three and Olson three.  RV had two hits off Larson and one each off Simmons and Olson.
"It was good to beat River Valley, something we have not done many times," said coach Luke Wiegel. "This team will continue working at getting better."
