Panthers survive bump on the court
On paper the Iowa-Grant volleyball team had some impressive statistics.
On the scoreboard the Lady Bulldogs beat the Panthers in a five game set.
Scores were 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 13-15.
Panther Stats:
kills - Ashley Liddicoat (11), Kylie Moneypenny (11), Kaci Myers (10)
blocks - Moneypenny (3), Myers (2)
aces - Ashley Liddicoat (4), Rheann Engelke (3)
service points - Ashley Liddicoat (13), Emma Liddicoat (11)
assists - Kristin Bingham (19) and Taylor Liddicoat (16)
digs - Rheann Engelke (13), Haley Yelinek (12)
"Well, not sure how to explain it as our stats look pretty good, but we still get beat the final three sets," said Panther coach Marla Simon. "We did have a little breakdown in our setting, and so I went with Taylor Liddicoat for the final two sets to just see if it would make a difference. Boscobel seemed to get stronger and I think we just thought we had it won because we took the first two."
She felt there was something missing from the Panthers in the match.
"It boiled down to having good team chemistry and we didn't have it that night," Simon said. We seemed to struggle putting them away the whole night. It's a match we need to forget and move on."
The girls moved on to Southwestern Thursday and swept the Wildcats in three games.
Scores were 25-23, 25-19, 25-19
Stat Leaders:
kills - Moneypenny (11), Meyers (10), Ashley Liddicoat (8)
blocks - Myers (2), Emma Liddicoat (2)
aces - Engelke (3)
service points - Engelke (11), Myers (7), Yelinek (7)
assists - Bingham (21)
digs - Engelke (15), Yelinek (10)
"A crazy game this is, to have such a low on Tuesday night and then comeback with our heads straight and playing for fun, leading to a big sweep of Southwestern. This was a very sweet victory for our program," Simon said "We put everything together - offense, scrappy defense, & good serving. Another strong night by our two middle hitters - Kaci and Kylie, and Ashley had some very timely hitting. We had some very strong serving by Rheann, along with Rheann and Haley doing well in the dig department. It was great to see the kids believe in each other. Now we have to keep that trait about our team for the rest of the season."
Saturday the Panthers took second place in their own invitational.
"3-0 in our pool play, win cross-over match over Dodgeville to move into championship match vs West Salem - which they win in 2 - 2ND PLACE," Simon said.
"I am very happy with a second place finish in a pretty tough tourney," she said. " Winning our pool and going 3-0 was great, especially our win over Portage."
"We didn't start off too strong vs. Highland in round one, dropping the first game, but we were led by Kaci and Kylie in that match with 9 kills each.
"During the Portage match, Haley and Rheann did a great job of serving, having key serving runs in the first and third sets.
"Then after a lunch break, we come back to beat Dodgeville in 2 games with strong serving - 10 team aces.
"West Salem just really out-sized us, and we didn't get much of an offense going against them.
"Kaci Myers had a great overall day, leading our team in kills, blocks, aces and had a decent amount of digs. She definitely gives us strong force in the front row. Rheann, Haley and Emma really played very strong back rows in serve receive as well as digs. Kristin worked hard the entire tourney to keep the offense balanced. But overall, a great team effort and it's nice to see some confidence in this group. Hoping we hold onto this for a tough match vs Cuba City this week and then going to a very tough tourney at Wisconsin Heights on Saturday. And, it's homecoming."
