Dodge-Point girls win, boys 4th at Darlington


Hannah Owens won the race and the Dodgeville-Mineral Point girls cross country team sprinted past the rest of the field Saturday at the Darlington invitational - kicking off the 2013 season for the team.
Owens, a junior, finished in 15:23, 22 seconds in front of Edgewood senior Courtney Link and 33 ticks ahead of Mount Horeb junior Sara Viner as the three runners broke the 16:00 mark.
The rest of the Dodge-Point varsity finishes were: sophomore Brittany Rhyner 5th in 16:06, junior Emily Philipps 9th in 16:33, junior Mikaela Bakker 13th in 16:52, senior Tessa Solberg 20th in 17:34, sophomore Kennedy Stumpf 26th in 18:13 and senior Kylie Greenheck 29th in 18:30.
Individually, all D-P runners finished in the top 35.
Dodge-Point coach Denny McGraw commented about his girls varsity: "The Varsity Girls started us out with a strong win, scoring 48 points to runner-up Mt. Horeb scoring 62 points. It was exciting to have WEKZ Radio 93.7 of Monroe covering the meet live. Junior Hannah Owens started the Dodge-Point team out with her third straight individual title at the Darlington Invite. She ran really well outpacing her nearest opponent by 22 seconds.
"Sophomore Brittany Rhyner placed fifth, she ran really smart moving up the entire race. Junior Emily Philipps had a very strong showing, running very well to finish 9th. Junior Mikaela Bakker paced herself well to finish 13th. Senior Tessa Solberg showed great leadership and determination finishing 20th. Sophomore Kennedy Stumpf and Senior Kylie Greenheck rounded out the varsity runners with solid races."
Team scores, after Dodge-Point and Mount Horeb, were: Edgewood 78, Darlington 104, Boscobel 117, Belleville 190, Pecatonica/Argyle 213, Lancaster 214, Richland Center/Ithaca 215, Prairie du Chien 248, Southwestern/Cuba City 296, Stockton 302, Riverdale 319.
The girls JV race was easily won by Dodge-Point 30-88 over runner-up Monroe.
Edgewood's Aurora Resop won in 17:28 with Monroe's Ciera Kaderly second in 17:49.
Then came a host of Dodge-Point runners.
Freshman MacKenzie Hall took third in 18:03 with junior Megan Hottmann right behind her in 18:15 and senior Debbie Heth next in 18:18.
Sophomore Mariah Zoet was eighth in 18:31 with junior Shianne Carroll rounding out the scoring in 10th in 18:54.

McGraw talked about his JV girls saying, "The JV Girls had a great first race scoring 30 points; their nearest competition was Monroe with 88 points. Freshman Macken-zie Hall was the top runner for Dodge-Point, placing 3rd. We have a very deep roster that will keep the competition fierce."
Other team scores were: Edgewood 92, Mount Horeb 106, Boscobel 110, Darlington 131, Albany 164, Holy Family 217, Pecatonica/Argyle 262.
D-P boys finish fourth
A familiar name appeared atop the 5K boys varsity race as Darlington senior Tyson Miehe (2-time D3 state individual champion) won in 16:13. Boscobel's talented sophomore Dakota Kaufman was a far distant runner-up in 17:16.
Dodge-Point junior Tyler Wunnicke finished 15th individually (12th team) in 18:21 as his team's top finisher - leading his team to a fourth place finish (124), behind Mount Horeb (61), Darlington (62) and Boscobel (81).
The rest of the Dodge-Point finishes were: sophomore Brandon Forseth 23rd 19:09, sophomore Jack Schickel 25th 19:15, sophomore Payton Grunow 28th 19:38, senior Henry Schickel 36th 20:11, sophomore Jake Riley 39th 20:19, senior Tannler Ames 40th 20:20.
"The Varsity Boys finished 4th against some tough competition. Junior Tyler Wunnicke was the top runner for the boys, placing 12th. Sophomore Brandon Forseth finished strong with a 23rd place in his first cross country race. Sophomores Jack Schickel and Payton Grunow helped the team by placing 25th and 28th respectively. Senior Henry Schickel stepped it up to score for the team, placing 36th. Sophomore Jake Riley and Senior Tannler Ames ran well to finish out the varsity squad", McGraw said.
Rounding out the team scores were: Albany 138, Belleville 175, Prairie du Chien 184, Monroe 206, Iowa-Grant/Highland 226, Lancas-ter 238, Richland Center/Ithaca 295, Riverdale 309, Cassville 356, North Crawford 358.
Led by top 10 finishes by freshman Tanner Cullen, senior Chanler Leonard and freshman John Davis, the D-P JV team captured second with 49 points to winning Albany's 45.
Cullen took 3rd in 20:15 with Leonard 4th in 20:25 and Davis 8th in 20:42.
Senior Caleb Byers was 14th in 21:04 and sophomore Nathan Eisenzimmer 20th in 21:41 to round out the team scoring.
The rest of the D-P finishes were: senior Cory Fitzsimmons 22nd 21:49, freshman Hunter Blalock 26th 21:58, sophomore Stewart Thompson 31st 22:01, sophomore Ty Driscoll 37th 22:20, senior Chance Whitlatch 39th 22:25, freshman Luke Davis 42nd 22:36, senior Dalton Nohns 48th 23:02, junior Micah Sprain 53rd 23:21, senior Nolan Pfaff 57th 23:42, freshman Trevor Ross 65th 24:11, freshman Hayden Phillips 71st 24:29, freshman Conner Trocke 73rd 24:31, senior Bobby McNeill 75th 24:42, freshman Bailey Riley 77th 24:50, senior Reid Suddeth 85th 25:50, sophomore Tristan Wilkens 93rd 27:03, sophomomre Aaron Ram-thun, 96th 27:09, senior Brenyn Schmit 100th 28:03, fresshman Henry Luitjens 103rd 28:53.
"The JV Boys finished a strong second place. Freshmen Tanner Cullen led the way for the JV Boys, placing 3rd in his first cross country race. We have a good group of young runners out that will improve as the season progresses," McGraw pointed out.
Other team scores were: Mount Horeb 83, Darlngton 121, Monroe 130, Prairie du Chien 182, Tri State Home School 185, Holy Family 189, Boscobel 215.
Several Dodgeville Junior High Runners competed in the boys junior high race (1.3 miles) with their team taking second with 37 points behind winning Darlngton's 35.
Boscobel scored 78 with Holy Family at 79 to round out the team scoring.
Dodgeville Junior High team results were: Juan Navarro 1st 7:23, John Phelan 6th 8:23, Dylan McGraw 9th 8:38, Isaac Grunow 10th 8:42, Ryan Walczak 11th 8:51, Noah Blalock 13th 8:58.
In conclusion about the day overall, McGraw said, "It is always exciting to have the first invite of the season after three hard weeks of practice. We had a great fan base that really makes it fun for the runners as they hear people cheering them on throughout the race. Saturday, September 14th we run the River Valley Invite at the Little Springs Golf Course in Spring Green."
Iowa-Grant/Highland finishes
Iowa-Grant/Highland ran two girls in the varsity race.
Sophomore Caitlyn Fowell finished 62nd in 20:12 with senior Gabie Campbell 64th in 20:15.
In the JV race, freshman Julia Cockroft took 72nd in 22:23.
The boys fielded a complete team with junior Jordan Jenks finishing in the top 10, taking seventh in 17:58.
Junior Micah Bomkamp was 47th in 20:30 with sophomore Benjamin Connolly 49th in 20:32, junior Creighton Biddick 51st in 20:37, freshman William McLeer 72nd in 21:35, senior Charles Connolly 76th in 22:07 and junior Kyle Faull 81st in 23:03.
In the JV race, sophomore Jacob Soman was 97th in 27:24.
