September 11
But September 11, 2001 that all changed.
At the time our nation was in chaos. No one could fully comprehend why planes were striking the Twin Towers in New York. No one could fully understand why our nation which has freely opened its doors to everyone would be under attack.
Whatever anyone's mood was at the moments prior to the attack it changed to sadness and concern immediately.
Innocent people lost their lives in horrific ways. Rescue personnel faced extreme danger and some never returned.
At the same time a plane was flown into the Pentagon, taking more innocent lives.
At the same time another plane was landed in a field. Heroic passengers said "no way" to the terrorists and while they lost their lives, the innocents who were targeted were spared.
History books will carry details of the tragic event and the direction our country took to combat terrorism. It will be required reading for those who did not live through it.
But those of us who did live through it will have the horror, the chaos, the senseless deaths as part of us forever.
We will and should not ever forget.
