Comets roll to win over Highland
The Comets rolled to a 46-7 decision over host Highland Friday in a Six Rivers early season match-up. They ran for 293 yards and passed for 92 more while holding Highland to 52 yards on the ground and none through the air.
The Cardinals threw six passes but did not complete any.
Hunter Nix, a junior back for the Comets scored first but Austin Yager answered midway though the first quarter. His score was set up by a long kick off return by Riley Crapp.
After 5-10, 245 pound senior Cody Schwab bulled over from the three to make it 14-7 before the end of the first frame, the Comets just kept on going.
"They just kept rolling," said coach Shaun Reuter. "Defensively we couldn't get off of the field and offensively we couldn't get anything going. They just physically dominated us the whole night."
The Comets led 27-7 after Dallas Esser and Nix scored in the second quarter.
They got another score in the third quarter when Cole Adams got loose then punched the ball in twice more in the final frame. Luke Kirschbaum and Dylan Ganahl-Johll did the honors with a 15 yard run and a 65 yard returned punt.
The difference in number of plays was a factor.
"Again they physically dominated us and were basically able to do whatever they wanted. We need to have our guys better prepared at reading their keys defensively," Reuter said.
He said the Cardinals have some work to do with their aerial attack.
"Right now we are struggling in the passing game," Reuter said. "We just need to slow down a little bit and not press so much. As a staff we need to do a better job of preparing for this week."
The Cardinals are virtually a boys among men team when it comes to who they can put on the field.
"Youth and inexperience is a big issue for us," Reuter said. " Add on a couple of injuries and we get very thin in a hurry. None of the injuries were serious and they should be back this week."
This week's practice will have focus on getting better at the game.
"Defensively we need to read our keys better and tackle much better. Offensively we will be working on our passing game and our run blocking, particularly sustaining our blocks."
Reuter said the Comets were impressive.
"They are a much improved team having all but one player back from last year.," Reuter said.
This week the Carinals entertain Benton/Scales Mound.
"Both teams will be looking to bounce back from tough losses this week,"said Reuter. "They have played two of the favorites in the conference this year so they will be coming up here looking to get a W. We need to keep our heads up and improve from last weeks performance."
