Dodgers fight way into post season
The Dodgeville football team scored early and won the game they needed for a spot in the post season Friday, turning back Prairie du Chien 44-14 in the SWC finale.
The win put the Dodgers at 4-4 in conference play and gave them what they were focused on, a berth in the WIAA Division 4 playoffs at 5-4 overall.
The Dodgers beat Mineral Point in pre-season play then earned wins over Platteville, Richland Center and twice over Prairie du Chien.
Next up is Platteville at the UW-Platteville Butch Lietl Field Friday at 7 p.m. The Dodgers shocked the Hillmen 48-45 in their first meeting then struggled in a 36-0 loss the second time the two teams met. The second loss will serve as a motivator for Friday.
Dodgeville coach Ryan Bohnsack is looking forward to a third meeting with the Hillmen.
"I'm glad we play them again," Bohnsack said. "I'm expecting it should be a hard hitting football game. I know our team performance three weeks ago was frustrating to everyone in the program and I know the guys will be ready to go."
They showed the type of readiness they will need in the one and done remainder of the season last Friday. The Dodgers stuck 15 points on the board the first quarter then upped the score by 29 the second frame.
Prairie managed a pair of touchdowns in the fourth frame.
Four minutes into the first quarter senior Logan Yeager ran in from the 12 and Travis Hendrickson kicked the extra point.
Midway through the first frame quarterback Austin Larson broke free from the 10 and then passed to Yeager for the conversion and a 15-0 lead.
The second quarter saw Yeager score twice. He opened the frame with a 29 yard run and closed it by returning an interception 58 yards.
Hendrickson plunged over from the one for the second score of the quarter and Larson nailed Travis Sigg from five yards out for a third score.
Larson threw two point conversion passes to Yeager and Brady Wetter while Hendrickson kicked an extra point after Yeager's final score.
That was about it for the starters as Bohnsack elected to go into the depth chart to stay away from unnecessary penalties. Prairie was getting penalized often and lost 113 yards because of it.
"That made us pull some seniors early because Prairie was getting penalized for late hits and we didn't want to risk losing an athlete because of their lack of sportsmanship," Bohnsack said.
Yeager led the rushing with 119 yards on 11 carries and Larson passed for 79 with a seven for 10 performance.
The win over the young Blackhawks was the result of the Dodgers taking the game plan to heart.
"We needed to go into the game and execute our schemes and we did that," Bohnsack said "Winning got us into the post season...losing would have sent us home."
"The kids were focused and knew what they wanted to accomplish," the coach added.
He said the seniors were responsible for a lot of the success.
"The seniors did a great job in the game," he said.
It has been a few seasons since the Dodgers reached the post season and Bohnsack said hard work has paid off.
"Getting in is huge," Bohnsack said. "The kids did a great job working in the weight room which gave us a shot at being in this position. We have a lot of proud kids and coaches."
