Cards survive Shullsburg's challenge
Coach Maria Wineski noticed the play was ok at times, not the best at times and never reached the level she was hoping for. That is more than likely why the match went four games instead of three.
The Cardinals won 25-14, 25-18 then lost 26-24 before winning 26-24.
"After a big win over Potosi Tuesday I was hoping we would keep the same competitive edge going against Shullsburg," Wineski said. "But we didn't play as well as I had hoped we would."
There were a couple long serving runs that helped the Cardinals in the fourth game. Brenna Bomkamp served points 14-19 and Bailie Rose went from points 20-24.
"We were down 19-9 in the fourth game then those two girls served us back in it," Wineski said.
Freshman middle hitter Jessica Kosharek had seven kills and four blocks for a steady performance for the Cardinals.
"She has been seeing more action lately and is settling in quite well," said Wineski.
Bomkamp had eight blocks and four aces.
Janel Laufenberg was the kills leader with 15 and Shanaya Hebgen contributed 33 assists.
Caitlyn Wienkes had 39 digs.
"Even with a 25-14 win the first game I didn't feel like we had won by a lot," Wineski said. "We kept them in the game and they came ready to play. They wanted it."
"We talked about being ready to play at all times and tonight we weren't," Wineski added. "But a win is a win."
The Cardinals are off until next Thursday when the entertain Belmont in a "Pink Game." The teams are raising funds for breast cancer awareness.
