Peewee Ice Wolves win nail biter
Although not as high-scoring as their one-goal victory a week earlier, the game had all the edge-of-your-seat action a youth hockey fan could ask for.
The first period proved to mirror that of the previous week's game: nothing to report on the score sheet save for a lone penalty on Monroe. The Ice Wolves started the scoring a few minutes into the second period, as Samuel Angel punched in a rebound off a shot from Jeremiah Beasley-Harris who would earn the assist. With no other scoring in the period the Wolves went into the third ready to turn up the pressure, but the home team stepped up their game as well, making for an intense, 15-minute shootout. Goalies at both ends of the ice came up with big saves. Conner Rusch was strong in net, but with several minutes remaining Monroe was able to slide a rebound through a screen and into the net.
The rest of the game was played at a furious pace. The Wolves threw shot after shot on net but were repeatedly denied by the Monroe goaltender. With just under one minute remaining in the game the Ice Wolves' hard work finally paid off. After an initial shot was blocked in front, chaos ensued around the Monroe net. All five skaters on the ice for Monroe collapsed around their goalie as he tried frantically to cover the puck. After bouncing off skates and sticks for several seconds the puck came to rest just outside the goal line. Joel Ringelstetter saw the loose puck and, as he was being knocked down, managed to get his stick on it and tap it into the net, giving the Wolves a one-goal lead. Brock Turkington and Matthew Berg were each credited with an assist on the goal.
The final minute of the game would prove to be the longest, as Monroe pulled their goaltender to add an extra attacker. The Wolves' defense fought hard to keep the puck away from their own net and, with time winding down, Turkington was able to work the puck along the boards and out of the zone to Sean Wahlin, who fired the puck halfway down the ice and into the open net as time expired. Breathing and heart rates slowly normalizing, the fans picked their way through spilled coffee and strewn popcorn as the two teams congratulated each other on a wildly exciting, hard-fought game.
The rematch later in the season is already being called one of the most anticipated games of the year. In the meantime, the Peewees will have a week to prepare for their next game after a late schedule change. Their next game is now this Saturday as Stoughton comes to Dodgeville for an afternoon matchup.
