Panthers hit way to 5 wins
But, 93 hits spread over five straight wins is more than just OK. In fact it is down right awesome.'
"When we get going we can really hit the ball," said Iowa-Grant softball coach Deanna Fulton.
That is good news for the Panthers, especially pitchers Brea Stanton and Jackie Olson who keep the opponents at bay while their teammates are hitting and rounding the bases.
The Panthers banged out 16 hits in an 11-1 win over Fennimore in the first game of a double header. Stanton spaced four hits while fanning six and walking two in the win.
Rheann Engelke and Olson both went 4x4 with Engelke getting a pair of doubles and Olson one. Engelke drove in three runs and Olson one.
Ashley Liddicoat doubled twice in a 3x4 performance and drove in a pair of runs.
Brittany Lawinger was 2x4 and scored twice.
Taylor Jackson, Kaci Meyers and Stanton each had one hit.
The Panthers treated the second game almost like batting practice with 25 hits in a 20-11 win.
Engelke was 4x5 with three rbis.
Liddicoat went 4x6 with two rbis.
Jackson was 3x5 with a triple and a double and drove in a pair of runs.
Lara Daentl went 3x5 and knocked in a run.
Kylie Moneypenney went 3x4 and drove in four runs. Kaci Meyers was 3x6 with a triple and a double while adding two rbis.
"We are hitting the ball well," said coach Deanna Fulton. "We gave up too many runs but you can't complain when you hit like that."
Saturday the Panthers won their own tournament, beating Seneca 10-8 and Platteville 18-0.
Stanton pitched both wins with help from Olson in the second game.
Engelke was 2x4 with a double and a run scored against Seneca. Daentl was 2x4 with two rbis. Jackson went 2x3 and Moneypenny doubled.
A five run fifth gave the Panthers their cushion. Hits by Jackson and Meyers started it and were followed by two errors. A double by Moneypenny and a single by Stanton contributed to the outburst.
Stanton fanned four and Olson one in a combined one hitter over Platteville.
The hitting leaders included most of the lineup as the Panthers banged out 20 hits.
Lawinger and Daentl both went 3x4 with Daentl hitting a double. Moneypenny, Liddicoat, Stanton and Olson all were 2x4 with Moneypenny and Olson both driving in two.
Jackson went 2x2 witha double and Meyers doubled and drove in two runs.
The Panthers also played the game without an error.
"It was impressive both at the plate and in the field," Fulton said. "We hit the ball well all through the line-up."
Stanton got her fifth straight win as the Panthers beat Riverdale 14-5.
Engelke led a 13 hit attack with a 2x4 day and a triple. Olson was also 2x4 and had a double. Moneypenny and Stanton both went 2x3 and Daentl was 1x3 with two rbis and just missed a grand slam home run.
"Again we hit the ball well and only struck out four times," Fulton said. "We had some breakdowns defensively that we will have to clean up."
The Panthers open tournament play Thursday, hosting Cass-ville/River Ridge at 5 p.m.
