Dodger girls win a pair in SWC
They five-inninged visiting Richland Center 19-9 in the rain on Thursday and then went to Prairie du Chien on Friday and came back with an 8-3 win.
Against RC the Dodgers were quickly down 3-1 after one inning and 3-2 after two.
Three Hornet walks and two singles netted the three runs.
The Dodgers scored on a Courtney Cushman ground out and a double by Jacque Rossing.
RC tallied three times in their half of inning number three, but then came the Dodgers.
They took a 7-6 lead with five in the third on four consecutive walks, a two RBI single by Sam Arnold and a two RBI single by Samantha Crowley.
After the Hornets took the lead back in their half of the fouth with three tallies, the Dodgers scored 12 in the bottom of that frame.
Brooke Lee, Crowley and Haley Jones each had RBI singles and Caarley Haack polled a three-run homer.
Cushman also singled and Courtney Reukauf had a two RBI single.
Rossing, Jones and Crowley each had two hits with Lee, Cushman, Becca Veinberg and Reukauf all collected one.
Arnold struck out two, walked seven and gave up nine runs (7 earned) on seven hits.
"It looked like we were going to be playing in a light mist but then at game time it started raining and continued for at least the first 3 innings," said Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck. " While the diamond held up in general, the batters box and the pitching area really turned greasy and soupy. It didn't seem to affect the batters much but it surely effected the pitchers as evidenced by the score and the number of walks issued. I'm not sure what was the deal with the pitchers as we kept dry ball in the game - perhaps they couldn't get their hands dry or perhaps their plant foot was slipping. The rain seemed to let up somewhere in the 3rd. inning and it even seemed to get a little warmer. Perhaps that was only the case for us with the runs we were scoring and not so for Richland Center on the other end of the score. We only batted in 4 innings as the game ended after the top half of the 5th. on the Mercy Rule."
"We played pretty good defense the whole game and Sam limited her walks in the last half of the game to allow us to break it open and end the game early. Overall, we played well under tough conditions and really hit the ball well. It appears to me that our hitting is really starting to come around," he added.
Friday at Prairie again the Dodgers trailed after one - 1-0.
They plated five in the top of the second to take the lead for good.
A Veinberg double drove in Cushman and Faith Loy with Kristal McVay, Reukauf and Rossing also scoring runs.
Prairie made it 5-3 with a pair in the third, but Dodger hurler Sam Arnold shut them down the rest of the way, facing just one over them minimum in batters.
Her team plated a run in the sixth on walks to Reukauf and Rossing, a sacrifice by Lee and a groundout by Crowley.
Two insurance tallies came in the seventh on two errors and RBI singles by Haack and Rossing.
Lee was 3x4 with Cushman and Veinberg 2x4. Rossing, Haack, McVay, Loy and Crowley also had hits. Loy, Veniberg and Lee had doubles.
Arnold struck out five, walked two and gave up three runs (2 earned) on six hits.
Prairie hurler Aspen Wikan was 2x3 at the plate and struck out four while walking three and giving up 12 hits.
Van Dyck talked about his team's effort: "Fairly obviously, I've been happy with the team in several of the victories that we have had. Particularly when we've come from behind in games to win them. This is the first game this season where we have played a complete game basically to what I believe our potential to be - the first game that I can say that I've been satisfied with. Sam pitched well for the whole game, we played good defense; we ran the bases well; and the entire team hit extremely well for the entire game.
"Defensively our outfield played an overall solid game with basically no mental errors and while they didn't have a lot of opportunities we made most all of the plays that we should have. The infield had the type of night that they are capable of having, making almost all of the plays they should have made including every one of them making at least one really tough play. Their play was highlighted when Becca pulled down a real high throw at first base and was able to come down on the base just in time to get their speedy leadoff hitter for the 2nd out of the 7th. That was followed by Faith backhanding a shot down the 3rd base line and making a perfect throw to 1st for the final out of the game. It just finished off the game right."
