Pointers turn in five wins

Beth Wood has been doing her own version of what it is like to be the Energizer Bunny.
She worked every inning in the five straight wins earned by the Pointers since last Wednesday. And, she turned in three scoreless stints.
Wood did not give up a run to Cuba City, Fennimore and Iowa-Grant. She also had wins in a second game with Iowa-Grant and Fennimore.
Wood started her string of wins Wednesday with a 5-0 decision over Cuba City. She spaced three hits and struck out seven.
Chole Pustina took the loss.
Wood was also one of the leading sticks for the Pointers with a pair of doubles in three trips. Paula Pittz was 3x4, Emily Wood 2x3 and Caitlyn Qualley doubled.
Beth Wood doubled in the first and Pittz's single put runners at the corners. Qualley then knocked in one run and Jordyn Dolphin singled for a 2-0 lead.
The Pointers added two more in the fifth. Qualley doubled and Clara Chambers singled before Dolphin sent in a run with a ground out and another scored on a single.
Beth Wood doubled and scored on a single by Pittz to make it 5-0 in the sixth.
"We beat them 10-0 earlier in the week but they switched some things and we had to scrape out enough to win this one," said coach Quinn Schultz.
He said three successful sacrifice bunts helped move runners into scoring position for someone to drive them in.
Mineral Point jumped out a first quarter lead with five runs and went on to beat Iowa-Grant 13-2 in a SWAL game.
Beth Wood then went on to fan seven and walk two in a complete game effort and the win for the Pointers.
Brea Stanton took the loss. She struck out eight, walked two and gave up only three earned runs.
The Pointers were helped by 10 Panther errors and had an 11 hit attack.
Emily Wood's two run single in the first scored Beth Wood and Jordyn Dolphin as both had singled. Two errors allowed three more runs to score as the Panthers had four miscues in the opening frame.
The Panthers got a run in the first as Brittany Lawinger singled and advanced on a wild pitch. She was moved up via a bunt and scored on a single by Jackie Olson.
The Panthers scored their final run in the second on a double by Stanton and Lara Daentl's rbi single.
The Panthers also had doubles from Stanton, Rheann Engelke and Taylor Jackson.
"We hit the ball well but we couldn't throw it to first," said Panther coach Deanna Fulton.
Beth Wood had four rbis in a 3x3 performance and Halie Schmitz went 2x4 for the Pointers.
"The day before when we played it was in the 80s and it dropped to the 30s for this one," Schultz said. "It was a cold one."
The Pointers then swept a double header from Fennimore on an 8-0 shutout and a 12-2 decision.
Beth Wood struck out nine and walked two in the shutout while spacing five hits.
She was also 3x3 at the plate with three rbis.
Wood fanned seven and did not walk a batter in the 12-2 win. Only one of the runs was earned.
Beth Wood was 3x3 with two doubles. Qualley went 4x4 with a double and a home run that cleared the fence at Soldiers Memorial.
Emily Wood went 3x3 and Clara Chambers 2x3 for the Pointers.
A seven run fifth ended the game for the Pointers in five innings. Qualley ended the game with her double.
"We got it rolling in the fifth," Schultz said. "With 14 hits we had runners on but didn't break loose until the fifth. We left a lot of runners on early."
The Pointers met Iowa-Grant for a second time in a week and pulled out a 4-0 win on a Beth Wood shutout.
Wood allowed only one hit, struck out three and walked one.
Qualley was 3x3 with a pair of doubles and Beth Wood had a triple.
Stanton took the loss. She struck out four, walked one and was touched for three earned runs.
The Pointers scored all four runs in the fifth with a Qualley double the big hit.
Ashley Liddicoat's double was the lone Panther hit.
"It was a good, close competitive game," Schultz said. "It was a fun one to play."
Iowa-Grant coach Deanna Fulton said, "We played thema lot better than the last time. We had some chances to score - we just couldn't get the big hit."
