Dodger girls surprise Arrows

Dodgeville's softball team overcame a 6-0 Lancaster lead with seven runs in the fourth and then had to hold on for an 8-7 win in SWC play Monday.
The Arrows struck first and fast with consecutive singles by Ella Marlue, Steph Tranel and Tiff Leeser. Kelsy Kelly followed by being safe on an outfield error for three runs in the first.
A walk and three hits gave them another in the third. A walk, fielders choice, an error and Tranel's single in the fourth made it 6-0.
The Dodger bats came alive in the fourth with pitcher Sam Arnold starting it with a walk. Singles by Courtney Cushman, Carley Haack (RBI) and Faith Loy (RBI) was followed by a two-run double by Kristal McVay and an RBI two bagger by Brooke Lee. Samantha Crowley laid down a sacrifice and Haley Jones singled in Lee. After a Becca Veinberg walk, Cushman plated Jones with a double and it was suddenly 7-6.
The final Dodger tally (game winner) came in the fifth as Lee walked, stole second and went to third on a throwing error then scored on another error.
Lancaster had a lead-off single in the sixth, but that runner was thrown out at second by right fielder Jacque Rossing. Tranel followed with a double and scored on Haley Hentrich's single. She got as far as second before Leeser flew out to center.
Arnold retired the side in the seventh on a grounder back to her and two strikeouts.
Arnold struck our six, walked two and gave up two earned runs on 11 hits.
Lee, Cushman and Haack each had two hits with Loy and McVay both gathering one.
Marlue struck out just three and walked five while giving up seven earned runs on nine hits.
Tranel was 4x4 with Hentrich and Marlue each having two. Kelly and Shania Duncan both had one safety.
"We hadn't beaten Lancaster in quite a while and even though they had put the 10 run rule on us 2 weeks ago I thought that we could play them tough and have a good chance to win," said Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck. "But the game sure didn't start out well for us. They hit the ball hard in the first inning in particular and while we didn't make many physical errors, we really handled several defensive situations poorly. So by midway thru the fourth inning, we were down 6 to 0. While we weren't scoring, we were hitting the ball fairly well at least to get on base. But then we couldn't get the big hit and drive base runners in."
He added, "Defensively Samantha Crowley made several real nice plays at 2nd. base, Jacque Rossing threw out a runner at 2nd from right field in the 6th. That helped preserve the lead and catcher Courtney Cushman threw out 3 would-be base stealers. Throwing those base runners out really enabled us to have a chace to win. Sam Arnold had good velocity and movement on her fastball and a good change up. She battled and was able to keep us in the game. She still fought with her control and some of their hits were when she had to just lay it in there to keep from walking them. Still overall, she threw well giving up only 2 earned runs."
