Dodgers outlast Platteville girls

A 1-0 Dodgeville lead ging into the fifth inning quickly became a 3-1 Platteville lead, but a grand slam by Courtney Cushman turned things around for an eventual 12-9 Dodger win over Platteville Thursday.
Cushman, who had homered in the second for the lone Dodger run, plated Samanha Crowley, Hailey Jones and Sam Arnold, all who had walked.
The Dodgers also plated seven runs in he sixth with Arnold driving in three with a round tripper and Faith Loy plating two more on another long ball.
The Dodgers needed all those runs as the Lady Hillmen scored three times in the fifth, four times in the sixth and twice in the seventh with the tying run at the plate. Arnold retired Brittany Edge on a strikeout to end the game.
Cushman was 3x4 and scored three times with Loy being 3x4 and Brooke Lee 3x5. Jones and Carly Haack both were 2x4 and Arnold and Becca Veinberg also getting a hit in their 15 hit assault.
Arnold struck out 10, walked five and gave up nie runs (3 earned) on seven hits.
"It may not have been the proto type 1 to or 2-1 Fastpitch Game but it certainly didn't lack for excitement," said Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck.
"Defensively we played OK but not really good as we really need some practices particularily for our outfield although Brook Lee turned in several really nice plays at short.
Offensively we were just awesome for the last part of the game with 4 Homers, a triple and a Double. I thought that their pitcher was throwing well, we just started really banging the ball. Their Centerfielder made one of the nicest plays you'd ever want to see in the 2nd. to stop us from scoring as she backhanded a drive by Kristal McVay on the dead run in Lf Center field a step short of the fence before crashing over the fence and holding onto the ball to end the inning.
