Cardinal girls go 2-1


Highland's softball team won a pair of Six Rivers contests while losing one in recent games.
On Thursday they whipped Benton/Shullsburg 17-3 in a five-inning contest behind 18 hits and four-hit pitching by freshman Bailee Rose.
The Cards plated three runs in the first, then amassed nine in the third and finished with five in the fourth.
Benton/Shullsburg came up with their three tallies in the third.
Rose struck out four and walked two and helped herself at the plate driving in two runs while going 2x2.
Brenna Bomkamp led the hitting assault going 4x4 with a double, triple and having six RBI.
Both Kelly and Alicia Ramsden were 3x4 with Kelly doubling and plating a pair of runs.
Chakayla Stanek was 3x3 with a two bagger.
Benton/Shullsburg's Melissa Brant went the distance on the mound for her team. She struck out four without a walk.
"We hit the ball pretty well," said Highland coach Gary Pustina. "Their pitcher threw pretty fast, but straight. Bailee threw a decent game."
Friday Wauzeka-Steuben came to town and left on the short end of an 11-6 score.
The Cardinals were down 4-0 after the top of the first and 5-3 going into the bottom of the third, but they plated seven runs in the third. They added one more in the sixth with W/S scoring once in the fourth.
Kari McMannes tossed the win for the Cardinals. She struck out six and walked two while allowing nine hits.
Check struck out three without a walk.
Rose had two RBI with a double in the third for the game-winning hit.
Halie Kosharek was 2x4 with double as was Alicia Ramsden.
Bomkamp drove in two runs and was also 2x4 with a two bagger.
Stanek was 2x4 and Caitlin Wienkes drove in two runs.
"McMannes threw a good game after the first inning," Pustina pointed out. "We hit the ball pretty hard and had a good bunch of doubles."
Monday the Cardinals couldn't solve the bats of Potosi, dropping a 16-6 contest in five innings.
They scored twice in the first and four times in the third, but the Lady Chieftains scored solo runs in the first and fourth and seven in both the second and third.
Rose worked the first 4 1/3 innings striking out five, walking six and being responsible for all 16 runs on nine hits.
Alicia Ramsden went the final 2x3 walking one and allowing one hit.
Potosi's Emilie Rojeman struck out five and walked two while alowing seven hits to the Cards.
Rylie Bausch went 2x3 with a double for Potosi and Tina White also had a pair of hits in three plate appearances.
Alicia Ramsden was 2x2 for Highland with Bomkamp 2x3 with a double.
Wienkes doubled drove in two runs and Stanek also rapped a two bagger.
"We had too many walks in the second and third innings. With their hits and a couple of errors by us, it was our downfall," Pustina said.
The Cardinals are 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in Six Rivers West play.
