Win over S-B puts Eagles in sectional finals

When Barneveld's 44-29 win over Benton-Shullsburg in the WIAA Division 5 sectional semi-finals was complete, Eagles senior Madi Laube knew this was where she wanted her team to be.
The win sent the Eagles to the sectional finals where a rematch with Heritage Christian was assurd. The Lady Patriots ran over the Eagles in the same game last season and went on to claim the Division 5 state title with a pair of easy wins. They have been the state's top ranked team in the division all season.
For Laube, the lone senior on the Barneveld team and a four year varsity performer, the match-up with the Lady Patriots had no special meaning except a chance for a little revenge.
"It is just another game," Laube said as she took a few minutes to relax after another game in which she played her heart out.
"We don't want to go into the game scared,:" she said. "We will tell the girls that we can play against them and we can beat them."
"We have a great team this year and we get along so well," Laube said. "Everyone has a role and they are comfortable with it. If someone struggles, there is always someone to pick them up. Others always step up."
"This is our time," she said. "We are glad to be in the finals. We plan to play hard and have some fun with it."
The Eagles led 16-11 after the first quarter then put on the clamps. They held the Zephyrs to 18 points the rest of the way and outscored them in every quarter. They suffocated their opponent so much that the Zephyrs managed only two points the second frame.
Rachel Slaney had 15 points and Hannah Whitish 10 to lead the Eagles. Laube finished with seven and drilled a three pointer.
Sarah Redfern's 11 paced Benton-
Shullsburg.
The Zephyrs got within 10 at 39-29 with 3:47 left in the game but the Eagles salted it away at the free throw line. Slaney made four of five and McKenzie Sporle one of two as the Eagles scored the last five points of the game.
One of the keys to the win was holding Blaire Lutes to six points and only two baskets. That job went to Haley Kleppe.
"Haley did a nice job on her," Eagles coach Jim Myers said. "I thought all the girls played a good defensive game."
He said Laube did several key things as part of her floor game when it came to handling the ball, shooting and passing.
"That is what you want your seniors to do," he said.
"This was a big win against a good team," he added. "We had to keep them from doing what they wanted to do. It proves again that defense will win ball games."
