Along The Ad Routes

Last Friday night, at the Dodgeville boys basketball game, they had a "Miracle Minute" - a cancer fundraiser that goes to a cancer hospital. A good share of the DHS cheer section wore grey shorts as a remembrance of those we have lost to cancer.

We received a renewal and note from former Dodgevileite Virginia Cayler, who now lives in Onalaska, Wisconsin. She said " I look forward to getting my paper every week - a reminder of all the good years and friends our family had there. Hello to all!"
She has been a longtime friend of the family and of many Dodgeville area people.

Saturday morning, the "fearless four" - Bob, Terry, Dewey and myself - made the trip to Highland and ate breakfast at Grandma's Kitchen. Right away when we walked in the door "locals" wanted to know what news story brought us there? I answered first that we made a wrong turn in Dodgeville and somehow ended up there! Then (to the next group) I changed to that we ate them out of food in Dodgeville and decided to go north before the bitter cold set in! Anyway, by the time we had been there a little over an hour we had seen almost as many people from Dodgeville eating there as those from Highland! Oh, and the food was very good and there was plenty of it!

I just knew that the UW Badgers men's basketball team would go to Iowa Saturday and "lay an egg"! After beating two nationally ranked teams in Illinois and Indiana the past two games, they wouldn't be able to beat the "third I" of the group. After a horrible start for the UW (good for Iowa), they made a game of it and had a shot at a win at the end. Being down as many as 20 and somehow coming back to get to within four is pretty special!

There is action going on at the corner building at the corners of Iowa and Diagonal Streets in Dodgeville. Look for the opening of an organic food store called "Wild Weasel"! A Weasel is an animal while Wild Weasel is an aircraft group from the Vietnam War era - in case anyone wanted to know. Then, there is clean up happening at the former Dodgeville Truck Stop. Rumor has it that it will be back in operation soon! It's always good to have new businesses and former ones open!

It's hard to figure that we've completed the first round of high school girls basketball conference play and are one week into the boys basketball conference action. That means the tournaments aren't that far down the road. Oh, and wrestling tournaments begin with conference on February 2nd - not too far off at all!

I've got to confess about a driving story from last week. I was crossing the main street in Dodgeville and two WISCONSIN licensed vehicles failed to stop for me when I was in the crosswalk. I usually don't walk right out in front of people in the winter as you never know if they can stop on the wintery roads. Anyway a vehicle with a MINNESOTA license plate did stop for me and forced two other cars behind it to also stop.
