Hellenbrand's shot boosts Eagles

Barneveld junior boys basketball player Tyler Hellenbrand nailed a 13 foot jumper in the lane with five seconds remaining in overtime Friday night and the visiting Eagles hung on to defeat coach Matt Fink's Pecatonica Vikings 50-48.
The Vikings brought the ball across half court before calling timeout and with 1.5 seconds left on the clock, failed to create a shot opportunity off on the inbounds entry pass play made from in front of Pecatonica's bench. Earlier, the Vikings had also had the ball with just under a second remaining in regulation, but also failed to be able to get a shot off from an inbounds play before time expired, sending the game into overtime.
Dillon Conwell had 20 points for Pecatonica, including a running one hander in the lane with 1:20 remaining in regulation to put Pec on top 46-44, but Barneveld's Devon Schult hit two free throws with 49 seconds remaining, knotting the score before overtime.
Conwell scored his team's only points of overtime - with a 9 footer in the lane with 2:49 to play.
Hellenbrand scored from the baseline to tie the game at 48-48.
Coach Mike Whitish's team then ran more than two minutes from the clock adeptly protecting the basket ball until executing what proved to be the game winning basket with five seconds remaining in OT.
Junior Jermey Whitish had 18 points to lead the Eagles Friday and Schult added 14.
"From a pure x's and o's standpoint, we wanted to go man to man at the start but they are really good off the dribble," said coach Fink, regarding Barneveld's players. "Credit them - because they spaced the floor really well and we gave up 23 points in that first quarter. We went back to our 52 zone, which is basically a 1-2-2 zone, and I give Barneveld credit there also, because although we slowed them down with it, they were overloading it."
"At the half, our assistants convinced me a 2-3 zone would be a better option for us and by changing to the 2-3, they wouldn't be able to overload and we'd be able to rotate from our back side and we did that and it was effective in that second half. I don't think Barneveld scored a lot against our second half zone, but they scored when they had to and we could never get a lead to pull away. We had some successes at times in this one with Dillon (Conwell) taking advantage of some mismatches," added Fink.
The Vikings host perennial Six Rivers east power - Monticello tonight (Thursday, Jan. 17) before hosting the Black Hawk Warriors Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
