Along The Ad Routes

"Some of you may recall the ring I used to wear. It originally belonged to my grandfather. My grandfather wore it for many years and then one day he gave it to my father. And my father wore it for many years and then one day my father gave it to me, and I wore it for many years and a few days ago I gave the ring to my son, and he sold it to my grandson."

We received a renewal recently for a longtime subscriber - Rose Martin of Blue River. I understand that the near 97 year old also sent out several notes around Christmas time. She said: "Enclosed is $42.00 for another year of your paper. I misplaced the paper (label) to send back." She goes on to say that she suffers from macular degeneration and had surgery on her eyes that didn't help. "I also had surgery on my hands that didn't help either. I'll be 97 March 12th. I have enjoyed the stories that happened the past 150 years. Just wished there had been more about my hometown of Mifflin. Keep up the good work. Rose Martin 12980 St. Hwy. 80 Blue River, WI 53518."
I understand that she still lives alone in her house.

Talk about a couple of great NFL play-off football games, one Saturday and another Sunday. I was pulling for Baltimore to win the first game Saturday over Denver. probably because I really didn't really care, but they were the underdogs. Then, on Sunday, former UW Badger Russell Wilson engineered his Seattle team from 20 points down in the second half to go ahead 28-27 with 31 seconds remaining. But, Atlanta's Matt Ryan completed two passes and got his team into field goal position at the end. The field goal kicker missed his first try, but a timeout had been called just prior to the snap. He didn't miss on his second try. I wanted Russell Wilson to win, but the outcome made my cousin Jeanette of Atlanta happy!

Speaking of my cousin Jeanette of Atlanta. She grew up in Hialeah, Florida (between Miami and north Miami). She spent a lot of time in Wisconsin during her growing up years and went to college at UW-Platteville, seeing snow for the first time at age 18! She liked my reminiscing about our farm and goings on there, but said I forgot to mention one very important part. We used to hold family reunions there quite often and she and her folks never missed one. She remembered finding out about cousins who probably were removed some 20 times. It seemed that our farm house, yard and farmyard were filled with people enjoying our mother's good cooking and just a lot of fun games and socializing!
