Both Dodgeville coach Josh Busch and River Valley coach Eric Briehl agreed on one thing when the Dodgers beat the Blackhawks 58-51 Thursday.
Dodgeville's sophomore guard Taylor Stanek had a lot to do with the outcome.
Stanek poured in 34 points, 19 in the second half and 11 in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.
"Taylor kept getting open and kept shooting and hitting," Busch said. "She found a rhythm and stayed with it."
"We let Taylor Stanek get away from us," Briehl said.
Stanek started the game with an eight point first quarter and teammate Brooke Lee added six as the Dodgers rolled to a 16-11 first quarter lead. She added seven the second quarter, eight in the third and finished with 11 in the final frame.
Lee finished with 13 points and helped close it out with a four point fourth.
Freshman Kylie Hoffman helped the Hawks with 15 points, hitting all six of her field goal attempts and all five of her free throws. Alyssa Mueller added 10 for River Valley.
The Blackhawks were efficient with their shooting, hitting 60% on an 18 for 33 night. They also made 14 of 19 free throws.
But the Dodger pressure defense caused the Hawks problems and forced 32 turnovers.
"Many of those turnovers were more mental than physical," Briehl said.
The Dodgers welcomed the chance to play after a long lay-off.
"We had been off 17 days without a game leading up to River Valley," Busch said. "They are pretty fundamentally sound and also coached pretty well. We didn't come out looking very sharp. We were up 15 at one point in the second half and they cut it to three. We didn't panic and went on a good run."
