Pointers give Schmitz 400th win
To top it off the Pointers won the Burlington Duals, soemthing they haven't done before
They started the day beating Fort Atkinson 41-24.
"We knew it would be a long day and right now we just wanted to get through mentally in this tough tournament," Schmitz said. "We started out with a tough Fort Atkinson team and after Frank Baker fought hard in his match, but lost to a tough kid, Jake Riley got us going with a pin and it just kept snowballing after that."
Next up for the Pointers was Oak Creek and they handled them 68-10.
"They have a young team and there were lots of forfeits, Schmitz pointed out.
The final morning match was probably the toughest test on the day for the Pointers. They edged host Burlington 33-26.
"I felt we wrestled them really well," the coach said. "Two key matches for us were 120 and 126. Scotty Pittz (120) beat a state qualifier and I think htat was a real back breaker for them. Then Frank didn't give up a tech fall or pin aganinst a real tough kid. Jake kept good position in his match and secured the win for us."
After taking a lunch break next up was South Milwaukee and a 41-16 win.
"I felt we came out a little flat after lunch. We just didn't have the zest we had earlier," Schmitz said. "We got a big pin by Robby at 182 and a nice win by Brenyn (220)."
The championship match was against Mukwonago and a 57-17 win.
"Mukwonago has a nice balanced team," Schmitz pointed out. "I think a big key was starting at 152 and Tucker Pickel pinned one of their better kids in a match I think they felt they would win. From there we just rolled off a bunch of wins. The kids responded to what we needed to do."
"Right now I think we're where we want to be. We just need to work on little things to get them corrected before the busy month of February starts," Schmitz concluded.
The Pointers had a busy week as they faced SWAL opponents Darlington and Cuba City/South-western in duals Thursday and Friday nights.
First they toppled Dartlington 61-9 and then took care of Cuba City/Southwestern on Friday night 63-6 which was also Hall of Fame night.
"Following a lot of Christmas wrestling and a little break I felt we looked sluggish the whole match," Schnitz said. "We lost two matches we probably whould've won so on Friday we talked about it and the kids responded."
"We looked 100% better on Friday night. We were just outmatched against JJ Donar. We wrestled him tough and just made one big mistake that cost us six points. Overall, however, I thought the guys wrestled hard and got right out after it."
