Orioles turn lead into win over Cards

The bad thing about Highland's loss to Argyle was the Cardinals never found a way to get the lead.
They battled and outscored the Orioles in the middle two quarters but the damage was done both early and late as Argyle notched a 47-37 win in Friday's non-conference test.
Argyle led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. The next two quarters found the Cardinals pulling within one at 28-27 after three but a 19-10 final frame iced it for the Orioles.
Argyle did most of the damage the final quarter from the free throw line where they made seven of 11. Freshman Riley Ostby and Christopher Severson both made three.
Severson led Argyle with 17 points while Ostby added 11.
Bailey Bodenstein paced Highland with 12 points and Nic Pierick added nine.
The Cards stayed within two in the early stages of the fourth quarter.
"We fought back all night," assistant coach Kane Hoffman said. "We had to foul and free throws ended up being the difference."
It came down to fundamental basketball, Hoffman said.
"We didn't play fundamental basketball," he said. "One of our strengths all season has been the offensive glass but we didn't have that tonight."
On the other side of the court Argyle executed well all night.
"They played good, fundamental basketball," Hoffman said about the Orioles. "They were disciplined and did not beat themselves."
"We had not played since Dec. 19 so while that's perhaps a longer break than necessary it gave us a chance to have our guys work hard on their individual skills," said Argyle mentor Mike Cassidy following the Friday night win.
"I liked our pace early on - and we were pretty active in that first period. But then Highland made adjustments, taking away some of the things we had done early.
"In the fourth quarter, we went on an 8-0 run, they came right back at us with 6 points in a row and then our freshmen took over. Neither (Kyle Emberson and Riley Ostby) hesitated and they took advantage of attacking opportunities as they were presented. Emberson hit two three point shots and Ostby took the ball to the basket for a late hoop and added a pair of free throws. It's a good sign to have two freshmen combine to score 10 of a team's 19 points in the fourth quarter," added Cassidy, the former assistant boys coach to Jon Nedelcoff at Oregon High School, of the Badger Conference.
