Along The Ad Routes

By Mike Reilly-mreilly@thedodgevillechronicle.com

I received several comments about my "trip down memory lane" in my last week's column - about the many trips back and forth to our farm on Section Line Road. People also mentioned the basketball playing on our homemade court along with the "parties" that went on almost continuously sometimes during the summer months. I also remember the farming that was done with every neighbor helping out EVERY neighbor to get their crops in. There were a lot of rewards in doing that - no, not money but great meals and fun at everybody's farmstead!

We received a renewal from Janet Smith of Greendale, Wisconsin the other day. She wrote: "Another year - time to renew the "Fox" girls' subscriptions. (She and Julia (Marnocha) are daughters of the late Kenny Fox, longtime Ag teacher at Dodgeville High School) "Keeps us in contact with our roots - Love the 150 Year segment."

Speaking of the 150 Year segment, we are planning to do something more along those same lines. We just need a little time to figure out just what and get it implemented.

The Green Bay Packers made it through the first rung of the NFL playoffs. I really don't think the outcome would've been any different if the Vikings starting quarterback (Christian Ponder) would've been able to play. The Packers had their defense ready to go and kept Minnesota bottled up all day long. I do wish the offense would've done more in the second half, but then they really didn't need to - and maybe risk injuries by going all out in the second half!

Going to San Francisco will be a real test for the Packers this weekend, but then every playoff game will be a real test for any of the teams. As has been seen over the years, the favorite doesn't always come out on top!

Our breakfast 4 - Dewey Christoph, Bob Kratochwill, Terry Carroll and myself made the trip to Spring Green and ate at the General Store - very interesting. It is a serve yourself coffee, water and eating utensils place that has very good food and good coffee. We had a nice conversation with Sharon Nicholas, a paper box making artist - who eats there regularly. We also ran into a Dodgeville graduate Kim (Abdoo) and her husband, who live in Clyde. Also, Dewey is from Indiana and both Kim's husband and an employee at the General Store are from Indiana and not too far from where he was born and raised - small world!
