Panthers pick up win in holiday tourney


Iowa-Grant's boys basketball team went 1-1 at the Westby Tournament while Barneveld and Highland were winless in their holiday invites.
The Panthers lost a 10 point decision to Bangor 59-49 then got past River Ridge by the same margin, 63-53.
The Panthers were within two points after three frames, 41-39 but the Cardinals pulled away with an 18-10 final quarter surge.
Bangor nailed down the win at the free throw line where they made 17 of 23. The Panthers shot 12, making only three.
Caleb Miller had 23 points and Canon O'Hearn 17 to lead Bangor.
The Panthers had 14 from Logan Leverton and 12 from TJ Anderson. Colin Conner added nine, Isaac Anderson eight, Tony Duetsch four and Zach Price two.
Once the Panthers got untracked against River Ridge they were able to outscore the Timberwolves in three of the four quarters.
The Panthers trailed 16-13 after the first quarter but turned in three solid quarters to win 63-53.
Iowa-Grant was able to get four in double figures in their balanced effort. Leverton led with 22 while Isaac Anderson and TJ Anderson added 13 and 12.
Colin Conner was the fourth Panther to get double digits as he contributed 10.
Price added three, Duetsch two and Eli Wienkes one.
BARNEVELD TOURNEY
The Golden Eagles fell behind early but battled back against Belleville before settling for a 67-58 loss.
The Wildcats stormed to a 24-13 first quarter lead, forcing the Eagles to climb a hill the rest of the way. Barneveld outscored Belleville by two the rest of the way.
Devon Schult drilled five three pointers and led Barneveld with 23 markers. Hunter Whitish also got into double figures with 16.
Tyler Hellenbrand tallied eight before fouling out while Brycen Sorenson scored six, Dustin Hodgson three and Andrew Hummel two.
CUBA CITY TOURNEY
Highland ran into a pair of teams with strong basketball traditions and dropped a pair of games in the Cuba City Classic over the holiday break.
They lost to the host Cubans 72-41 after falling behind 25-4 the first quarter.
Nic Pierick had a 16 point performance for the Cardinals with Blake Bodenstein adding eight, Alex Kutzke six and Robert McGuire contributed five. The rest of the scoring came from Austin Yager with three, Andrew Wolfe who hit two and Mitchell Riley who put in a free throw.
Jason Derby led Cuba City with 21.
The Cardinals then lost to Brodhead 52-32.
Bodenstein led Highland with 15 points while Kutzke contributed nine, Wolfe and Yager three and Levi Linscheid two.
Danny Lewis led the Brodhead Cards with 17.
