Eagles shock SWC  leaders, win tourney
The Barneveld girls basketball team shocked SWC leader and Division 3 team Platteville 72-36 to win their own holiday invite. The Golden Eagles rode a 23-11 first quarter lead to the win as they outscored Platteville in every quarter.
Freshman guard Hannah Whitish had 25 points against the Hillwomen, 21 of those in the first half. There was no spot on the floor that the Eagles didn't control.
The Eagles had a 28-11 difference in made baskets and popped 11 three pointers in the process. Whitish and senior Madi Laube both had four as Laube put up 16 points. Sophomore Rachel Slaney nailed two and added 14 markers to account for three players in double figure. Cayla Carden came off the bench to add seven points and got the final three pointer.
Carden was a force on the boards with 10 rebounds, six on the offensive end. The Eagles controlled the boards as Slaney also picked off 11.
As well as the Eagles shot and boarded they also handled their defensive assignments as veteran coach Jim Myers prescribed. A lot of the success came from the pressure defense the Eagles used.
"The girls did a good job of flying around out there," Myers said. "We got more out of our press than I thought we would and were able to take away what Platteville wanted to do."
"We played a very good game and we shot very well," Myers added. "Hannah did a good job getting us going."
Whitish also had six steals and four assists.
"Everyone played and gave us very good minutes," Myers said. "We played extremely well the whole game."
The Eagles host Monticello Thursday.
