Along The Ad Routes

The Dodgeville Lions Club held its annual FREE Community Breakfast Sunday morning at Dodger Bowl. The club has held that event on the Sunday following Valentine's Day for the past several years. The group works hard on projects throughout the year, including a calendar sale and two antique/flea markets at Harris Park that are well received by the community as fundraisers so they feel they should give back to the community by holding the FREE breakfast. Any donations form the event are in turn given to another organization in the community. The same time as the Lions breakfast was going on there was a fundraiser for a Dodgeville Boy Scout troop taking place at the Dodgeville Grace Lutheran Church. That was for activities that the scouts were going to take part in. It's too bad that the two events conflicted with each other, especially when one was FREE and the other was to raise money. The same thing happened with the Dodgeville Optimist Club's annual Chili/Soup fundraiser a while back that they have had for several years on the same date. Several groups at Dodgeville High School held a spaghetti dinner fundraiser that same night before a home basketball game - neither knew the other one was taking place. I propose that all organizations, churches, school groups and whomever that are planning an event use the Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce as a clearing house for that event so that conflicts like this do not arise. When an event is in the initial planning stage, the chamber should be contacted to see if another group has something going on at the same time. Also, the first event in (or an event that takes place the same time every year) should be put on the chamber calendar on the website as soon as it is sent in to the chamber office so that groups can check the calendar out before planning another conflicted event. In my estimation, it would be great to see all organizations, churches, groups, etc decide to go this route.

The #20 Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball team really took it to #13 Ohio State Sunday, winning yet another game from a higher ranked team very convincingly. Those Badgers probably have the most wins of any team against a ranked team this season - especially one that is higher ranked than they are. That should speak volumes for them when it cones to NCAA seeding at the end of the season, considering that they take care of business the rest of the way. I think they only have one game left with a team with a better record than they have. Coach Bo Ryan and his staff are magicians in putting basically no-name players together and forming a team that battles for a Big 10 championship each the season. They were picked for sixth in the conference in preseason and are now just two games out of first place in third!

Congratulations to the Dodgeville, Iowa-Grant/Highland, Mineral Point and River Valley wrestlers that made it to the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament this weekend. Iowa-Grant/Highland, Mineral Point and River Valley each have four going on while Dodgeville has one. The weather forecasters are predicting a blizzard for Thursday afternoon into Friday as of early in the week (it could change). I hope that doesn't happen as I remember coming back for Madison during a storm like that a few years back during that same tournament. My nerves were so shot after that Friday night drive I couldn't force myself to go back for the finals on Saturday - something I very seldom miss!

I've got to mention that the other day I was crossing the main street at the Corner Drug Store corner heading east and (you'll never guess) a driver with an IOWA license plate was heading south and going at least 30 MPH and didn't stop for me when I was in the crosswalk! The young lady driver wouldn't even look my way as I was standing out in the crosswalk either!
