Mineral Point and Iowa-Grant/Highland were the top two wrestling teams in the SWAL this season. When they wrestled a dual match, it basically came down to the final match before the outcome was decided.
Saturday, at the Mineral Point Division 3 Sectional, after all the mats were cleared both teams went away with four wrestlers advancing to state next week - each team had a champion, two second place finishers and a third place finisher.
Mineral Point's Robby Chubb, a state runner-up last year, won at 195 lbs. while Reid Suddeth was runner-up at 113 as was Tucker Pickel at 152. Brian Steffes finished third at 285.
"I thought we wrestled well at times today," said Mineral Point coach Scott Schmitz adding, "but I thought we should've gotten Ross (Siegenthaler) through. He left it all out on the mat. He just let his semifinal match get away from him with a mental mistake that cost him. In the first round, we came out and won six of eight matches though.
"Scotty (Pittz) was in the toughest weight class of the tournament at 120. He had a great year as a freshman. Hopefully he will learn from this tournament, put in the extra time this summer and have a greater year next year.
"Jake Riley (132) had a nice pin in his first match and then ran into Spears of Riverdale and just came up short in his wrestleback.
"John Schmitz took two years off and also had a tremendous year. He helped us a lot throughout the season. He can be proud of the year he had,
"Reid (Suddeth), at 113, had a tremendous tournament with maybe just a little letdown in the finals. He gave up five points in the first period to a kid he beat last year. He has the Cadott kid in the first round at state on Thursday night, a kid who has been there before.
"Tucker Pickel (152) probably wrestled the best of anyone on the team. He was wrestling to win. He pulled out a gutsy win in the wrestlebacks. He just showed he wanted it more.
"Robby (Chubb) just continued to dominate his opponents just like he has all season. Next weekend he'll get the #1 seed from Stratford hopefully in the semifinals. Robby just continues to get better and that's what you need to do expecially this time of the year.
"Brian (Steffes) wrestled the best he has all year. He had to beat a tough Cashton kid in the first round to be able to make it to state - that's what he needed to do and he did. He gave McFall a match and almost had him to his back after a takedown. Brian continues to get better each week Finally he has figured out he can wrestle a full six minutes instead of trying to end it quickly."
Iowa-Grant/Highland 138 lb. Tucker Sarbacker was a champion with 195 lb. Derek Peat and 285 lb. Ben McFall as runners-up. Third place went to 145 lb. Luke Nowak.
"I was very pleased with how the four qualifiers wrestled on Saturday. I thought we wrestled very well I am happy for the four guys who qualif" said Iowa-Grant/Highland coach Ryan Allen.
"Tucker had a great tournament, beating 3 solid opponents. He also avenged a loss from 2 weeks ago at the Clash. I think his mental toughness and constant attacking was key for him. The way he has been wrestling the last couple weeks makes me very excited to see him at the state tournament. This is Tucker's third state trip.
"Both Derek and Ben had good days and ran into very good wrestlers in the finals and came up a bit short. I'm looking for them to be ready to go in a week. Both of these guys have been excellent leaders-by-example and it's paying off now.
"Luke did great on Saturday coming back to get third and getting the bid to his first state tournament. He has worked very hard this year and I believe if his confidence stays up he will be a very dangerous contender at the state tourney. He has been battle tested this year several times and knows the importance of taking things one match at time and that is exactly what I'll tell him - one match at a time.
"Cody came up short on Saturday and I hope that pushes him to work harder starting on Monday," he concluded.
Lancaster, winner of the regional and a team that is advancing to team state, had seven out of nine wrestlers qualify for state.
Wrestling at Individual State begins Thursday evening with the second and third place sectional finishers tangling. Sectional winners don't wrestle until Friday.
