Dodgeville went into the Richland Center wrestling regional Saturday with nine wrestlers, up one from last week's regional results.
Sam Gollon, a first-year junior wrestler, was a late addition to the meet due to last week's third place finisher missing when he was injured in a traffic accident and the fourth place finisher was unable to make weight. He lost his opening match, but as he said, "It was just great to be here and compete."
The day didn't go real well for the Dodgers as they were only able to get one wrestler through to compete at state next week - 152 lb. freshman Brady Wetter, who hopes to follow undefeated champion River Valley's Seth Liegel right to the finals. He has finished runner-up to the Blackhawk the past two weeks - at the SWAL/SWC CLASH and at regional.
Two Dodger seniors, Tyler Wunnicke (113) and Jasper Meeker (138) finished in fourth place, one short of state qualification. Another senior, Austin DeVoss (120) dropped his opening match and couldn't advance when his opponent lost his next bout. Also, senior Brett Binsfeld suffered a disqualification in his opening match and could not advance any further due to wrestling rules.
Sophomore Tyler Wunnicke (126) also dropped his opener and did not advance any further.
River Valley came into the tourney with five wrestlers and four moved to state, three as champions.
Joe Crook (145), Seth Liegel (152) and Zach Koch (195) each won their respective weight class while Garrett Riek was third at 170.
Alec Bass (106) lost his opener and did not advance any further.
Whien asked about how his wrestlers performed at sectional, River Valley coach Jaime Hegland responded, "Yes, River Valley had a pretty good day. We're excited about the opportunities that the State Tourney presents. Our match-ups are fine, we're not focusing too much on them. Each of our guys needs to continue to do what they're doing, focus on wrestling their match."
