The surging Barneveld Golden Eagles closed out the regular season by annihilating the visiting Pecatonica Vikings Friday, holding the Vikes to only 6 (two-point) field goals and by holding Pec to single digit scoring in the first three periods.
Junior Dustin Hodgson had 17 points and senior teammate Devon Schult added 10 for the victors.
Pecatonica was led by Chase Norton and Drew Schliem with seven points apiece but the Vikings were almost completely shut down until putting up 19 points in the fourth quarter against Eagle reserves.
"Our kids played with enthusiasm, hustle and they had a sense of urgency tonight - like they haven't had all season. I was really pleased with the effort - from our number one player all the way to our number 12 player off the bench," said Barneveld first year head coach Mike Whitish.
"We struggled defensive all year - and our while mission tonight was to turn the corner and to make a statement defensively - and the kids did. We had played well at Black Hawk offensively and defensively and
I was pleased we continued that type of effort tonight."
Pecatonica mentor Matt Fink was disappointed with the regular season finale on the Eagles' court.
"I thought Mike's kids played great tonight - collectively strong on defense - they got their hands on a lot of passes - with a lot of run-outs and easy scores early. And basketball's funny that way - because often, when you're getting those type of scores - the other shots start falling too and that's the kind of night Barneveld had.
Give them credit - they were very, very good in this one and we were less than average tonight."
"Looking the regular season as a whole though, we have gotten better and have improved over the course of the year - yes. We've played hard
and it's all a process - - building a program - and the wins will come. We have a plan and the kids worked hard all year - the kids care about one another. We'll be alright."
