Pointer girls thump Fennimore
The Mineral Point girls basketball team put together four solid quarters Thursday and posted a 53-29 SWAL victory over visiting Fennimore.
Cheyenne Udelhoven scored the game's first points, but that would be the only lead the Golden Eagles would hold all night.
Point then went on an 8-0 run that saw scoring from Paula Pittz, Emily Mitchell, and Caitlyn Qualley. The Eagles crawled back within two after four straight points by Alexi Needham, but Clara Chambers and Mitchell both scored in the final two minutes to make it 12-6 in favor of Point after one.
The second quarter started much the same way with the Pointers going on an 11-1 burst. Chambers knocked down six points and Jessica Schultz five during the stretch. The Point defense really stepped up, holding Fennimore to just one field goal in the quarter, and that not coming until just 38 seconds left before halftime. At the break, Mineral Point was fully in command at 28-12.
The second half was more competitive, but the Pointers had already established themselves and never let up with the intensity on both ends of the court as they cruised to the win.
Needham was the only Golden Eagle in double digits with 10.
Point was paced by its two freshman standouts--Schultz with 15 and Chambers with 14.
"We were able to get some turnovers out of our press and that really jump started our offense," said Pointer coach Mitch Wainwright. "We also did a great job on the boards, not letting Fennimore have second and third shot opportunities. Even though we were out sized, we only gave up two offensive rebounds in the first half."
"This was a great game for us that allowed everyone to see some quality playing time. Clara and Jessica had great games, and Emily got us going early on."
"We didn't practice yesterday due to the snow day, and as a coach, you always are a little nervous wondering how your team will play without practice, but the kids played really well," concluded Wainwright.
